I think this could be a relaxing and more enjoyable image if the boat was coming into the photo and not leaving, and it wasn’t quite so rule of thirds looking. These are my thoughts, of curse many will be pleased by this composition and think this is the one and only way to compose.

Normally I find your images a bit dark Kent (of course, normally people find my images a bit bright though

), but this one seems to work, as it pulls the eye to the boat and then to explore the sky, then back to the boat, ...

It has a moody feel to it, but not in an Alfred Hitchcock kind of way,

While it would technically be better if the boat was moving in the other direction, it takes a careful first look, or even a second look, to see the bit of splash to the left of the boat. Also, I think the boat and the sky are the main attractions so knowing what is in front of the boat isn't too critical here.

I am with Don on the darkness issue. It is a bit darker than I would like, but it works. I have no issue with the direction of the boat and do like the horizontals.

As said before the darkness is working in favor of the subject enhancing its brightness and holding the viewer's eyes.

Not sure what grandmas is referring to, but it appears to me that the boat is coming into the photo.

Yes, this is a bit dark ... a few tweaks on the rework.

The confluence is coming from the right side foreground. So, it wasn't so much a "rule of thirds" effort, just wanted to retain a bit of that river section in the foreground. I could reduce some of that, and go a bit more pano / scale vs. the sky.

Yes, the boat is moving "into" the frame ... right > left.

Got me on boat direction. I though the white in front of the left side of the boat was propulsion; perhaps even a working paddlewheel boat, and so moving from left to right.

Neither here nor there. it works.

Sorry I got the boat direction wrong.

The rule of thirds I was referring to is the placement of the focal point or boat in the image. Some here are referring to the boat as the subject, but it is a river scene as the subject with an interesting focal point or boat. The horizontal composition is fine as is.
