Thanks for checking. Seems like the iPhone and SSD yields faster transfer rates than the RAVPOWER.

I didn't do any speed tests, but I will try to remember to time the process next time I have a bunch of images on a card.

Hi Molson:
When I do canoe trips I just use an Apple SD card reader to back up files to my 1 TB iPad Pro and don't erase files from the SD card. Last time I was in the tropics (2020) I used a Gnarbox but have since sold it and got something similar to what Mitesh has. When I first tried the new set-up, I found it corrupted some files, but I think the problem was that I had a case on my iPad and the hub was not inserted properly. I just tested it now and it worked fine (once I remembered how to use the clunky iOS copy and paste function). This system also has the option of power, thanks to the USB-C port.

Not sure why I can't upload an image to show you my set-up (and yes, have Upload & Sell membership). I have a Kinston Nucleum hub with SD card reader (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B076BGJXTG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a SanDisk Extreme Portable 1TB SSD generation 1 (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B078STRHBX/ref=dp_iou_view_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

The beauty of using an iPad (Pro) is being able to see images on a big screen and even Photoshopping them if you want to do that in the field.

Cheers
Richard

Thanks for the info, but I have no interest in buying another iPad, let alone an iPad Pro. I think my iPhone setup will do just what I need, without having to buy or carry additional expensive gear.

Hi Molson:

Could you please clarify what 'system' you are using? How do you transfer files from the SD card directly to the SSD? i.e., Are you using a hub with an SD-reader and port for connecting to the SSD? That's what I do with my iPad but I am not sure if that works with an iPhone.

iPhone + Lightning to USB-C adapter + ______ + SD card reader + Samsung SSD?

I'm curious because there are times I need to travel light (long canoe trips) and it would be nice to leave the iPad behind. I look forward to the day that Apple finally uses a USB-C port and this all becomes moot!

Thanks
Richard

I decided to build my own system for working in the field with limited power options since I'm a wildlife photographer. It runs on a battery bank or A/C power. I did a walkthrough video on it if you are interested in building your own. It's been very reliable for me, and it's all commercially available hardware that is readily available from Amazon. It's based on open source software called Little Backup Box and it uses a Raspberry Pi 4.  I built it for about $100 and my video has links to all the hardware. It connects directly to my Canon R5 or I can use a card reader. https://youtu.be/qAEebY8UlRc

Hit me up directly at [email protected] if you have any questions about the box or the build.

my nexto-di is reliable as backup. i've installed a 1gb ssd to backup my xqd, sd, and micro sd. the nexto accepts sata ssd.

if you aren't shooting the newer cfexpress format, the nexto works just fine.

if camera makers are listening out there, provide future cameras with the capability to connect and backup files directly to an external ssd.
