p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Voigtlander users here?

Hi,
I recently attended a small photography conference and by chance I discovered Voigtlander manufactures lenses for m/43 with very wide apertures. I tried one 29mm Super Nokton f0,8 and a 60mm f0,95.
I was really surprised by the build quality and even wide open those 2 lenses were sharp, with a really “film look”. However in Internet there is really few reviews, samples available.
I would add that they are quite pricy so before buying one I wanted to know whether some of you currently uses Voigtlander lenses on m/43 and of course what are your impressions.

I’ve used the Voigtlander 42.5mm f0.95 on Olympus cams for several years. I’ve been quite satisfied. Wide open, it’s quite glowy which can be fun. Stop it down a bit, sharp. It’ll also focus quite closely.
Check the Lensrentals blog for their review of m4/3’s lenses in this focal length.

My impression of these lenses is that they are good performers, and often good wide open. The obvious disadvantages are they are MF, and have no electronic contacts. Then they are not cheap either. But if you want a 0.95 lens then they may work for you.

I shoot families and kids and I guess I just wanted a portrait lens with that magic 0,95. At that aperture even my beloved 45mm f/1.2 cannot compete in “look”. I would use it only as a very specialised lens for static subjects.
So it seems like wide open the file is usable? Good to know. I guess probably -because of the 15% discount currently available- I might get one

I used to own the 25mm and 45mm (or thereabouts) lenses in my early MFT days. I sold them because they were too heavy and large within the system and I found them very hard to focus, so in reality the wide apertures weren’t useful to me.

That’s years ago, so I don’t know if focusing would be easier now.

Interesting. When you say “hard to focus” are you referring to the fact that wide open focus peaking wasn’t accurate ?

I find wide open focus peaking never accurate with those fast lenses, no matter which camera brand I use. So, yes.

I guess magnification works if the EVF is sharp enough, but that’s not my shooting style, certainly not with MFT.

In the end -thanks partially to GAS- I decided to pull the trigger and I ordered the 60mm (the 29mm is too expansive)

Just saw this. I purchased the 60mm late last fall and was expecting it to be good though a bit soft wide open. Boy was I wrong. It was really sharp and full of micro contrast even wide open. I think it is my sharpest M4/3 lens. I already had the 10.5, 17.5 and 42.5 and really liked them, but all are a bit soft and dreamy at the max aperture - takes f2.0 to really begin to get the sharpness and contrast to "normal" and f4-f5 to get rid of all the "dreaminess". Let us know how you like it!!

Thanks for posting - wish I had seen this sooner.

Bill

Thanks Bill!
What you’re saying is really exciting: I thought I needed at least f1.1-1.2 to have usable files, but it looks like I should be able to take portraits even at f/0.95
Just got confirmation next Monday it should be available! I will definitely post here my impressions: this is my first full manual lens.

Voigtlander is one of my favorite lens manufacturers. My favorite FOV is 10.5/21 so I have the 10.5 for MFT and 21 for Sony FF. Excellent sunstars begin at f2. I also have the 17.5 for MFT. I have several for Sony, you won’t be disappointed.

CameraQuest is a great place to buy Voigtlander lenses, Stephen is a great guy, great prices and fast shipping.

A quick update. I picked it up at my local camera store yesterday and I was playing with it all day: mainly flowers and some portrait of my son. I exclusively used it at 0,95 (well, a couple of times I closed it at f2) and I am really amazed. Even at f/0,95 it is really sharp! Sure, stopped down a little (f/1.4-2) it is much sharper, but I can say that wide open files are perfectly usable, even for paid work.
I was expecting an heavy lens, but it is reallyyyy heavy. Nonetheless, I am extremely happy and I will keep it
Thanks to all of you for all your comments and suggestions!

9 months have passed, and this lens is pretty much the only one I have been using recently. To be honest with you I really love manual focusing 😃 but I think I need something wider than 60. I wonder if 29mm will be wide enough. I am seriously considering the 29mm Voigtlander.

If you get it I hope you will post your experience. I am eyeing it myself, but just cannot justify the cost....

Yet. :-)

What little I have been able to find online indicates the 29mm is every bit as good as the 60 (even a tad better). Even wide open. I want the 25, but maybe the 29 is the better choice??

I've got the 17.5 and 42.5. Both are lovely and a joy to shoot.

I have the 10.5, 17.5, 42.5 and the 60. I want them all but cannot remotely afford both the 29 and the 25. Oh well.

Love them as well!!

Well, that’s exactly what I was thinking last year: 1800EUR for a manual lens, with a weird focal length, all manual (29mm) where the only “nice” thing is the f/0.8 that probably is unusable. For this reason I bought a “cheaper one” (60mm). Now my copy not only is great at f/0.95 (sure, stopped down at f/1.4-2.0 gets really sharp), but I enjoy a lot the whole process of manual focusing. So sooner or later I’ll get the 29mm :P
I will definitely post here my impressions, but it looks like that lens didn’t sell well (it is almost impossible to find real user reviews).
Regarding 25mm vs 29mm Luckily I don’t plan to ever buy the voigtlander 25mm because I own the Olympus 25mm f/1.2 and it is my most favourite lens, and the lens I use for paid work (I don’t get too much of it, just from time to time because photography for me is not my main source of income, it’s a “probby” namely merge “professional” + “hobby” ).
Now the problem is to convince my wife we need a new lens (I own already too many of them: 6).

I have the 29 0.8 and 60 0.95... love them both. They are usable wide open and not nearly as "dreamy" as the previous f0.95 generation (10.5, 17.5, 25 and 42.5). This is why I waited until the 29 and 60 came out... the earlier f0.95 generation was too soft until f1.4. I found a used LNIB 29 for almost half price... how lucky is that?! The 60 was on a crazy sale new for around 35% off.

Whenever I feel in a rut, these two lenses perk me up.

I pulled the trigger: I found the 29mm f/0.8 new for 1200USD and on Wednesday it will be mine 😄
