Hi Gary,

The next to the last is my favorite as it has the best combination of sharp head, wing blur and tail fan.

Appreciate the input !
These were purely accidental. I was looking for bugs in this lilac bush and this hummingbird which is normally very shy all of a sudden got very bold and kept hovering about even though I was so close. I had just about the worst lens imagineable for hummingbirds mounted, the Nikkor 200 f4 micro, but gave it a go anyways

The only problem I had was the shutter sound of the D500 because the bird was so close. I kept thinking a silent shutter would be so much better. So this morning I ordered a Z50 to use strictly for hummingbirds and other close critters. I've had no real interest in milc up to this point but last night convinced me to dip my toes in that pool and at least try it If I like that little body and if I can get used to an EVF, well, we'll see.

Mirrorless is a delight and I hope you enjoy it. When I tried the Z50 it was not ready for primetime. I understand they have improved the AF. If enough, you should have a blast.

I've been following along with opinions on that body since it was introduced and yeah, there does seem to be some limitations. I'm only planning on using it for specific situations which is why I wanted to go the cheap route. I was considering the A6400 but that means all new glass. Maybe I'm crazy thinking of using it for hummingbirds, we'll see. Certainly won't replace my D500 for everything else. My feeling is I'll give it some time and that may help my thinking going forward about possibly switching systems. Or not.

I can see the Z50 for perched humming birds. In flight, well you will need to work hard.

Yup. I don't have very high expectations but it's replacing my D5600 as a lightweight carry along so if I can get it to focus on hovering hummingbirds that'll be a plus.

Very nice Gary. It is amazing how so many accidental occurrences turn into some really nice stuff. I moved from a Canon 5D4 to a EOS-R when it first came out to dip my toes in mirrorless, but wasn't happy with wildlife just too slow and AF wasn't that great. But then I got a R5 and a R3 and couldn't be happier. One of the guys I go owling with has a D850 and the 500 PF and gets amazing stuff. Shooting owls is mostly low low light opportunities, my R5 and R3 work great but not as good as his D850. I call it the night stalker for it's ability to shoot in the dark. I think the D850 and D500 have the same AF system which is unbelievably good. However like you his shutter noise is so noisy it really draws the attention to the birds. And boy what a lens that 500 PF is. I have the 400DO II and withTC 1.4 is 560 @5.6 and sharp, but I think the 500 PF is even better.
