p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 28-200

Anyone shoot with one of these? I’ve never used a super zoom, but I’m thinking for hiking I can swap out the the Tamron 28-75 I usually use for this and not really gain any weight. And I do like having the option to shoot in the 100-200mm area. I’d pair it with an ultra wide and be all set for hiking/landscapes - if it’s a good enough lens.

Had the 28-200 and sold it after using it a few times.

I'm spoiled by my Contax-Zeiss zooms - 35-70, 28-85, 80-200 and lately 100-300.
The images made with the Contaxes are simply so much nicer - better sharpness, but also much better colors and overall rendering - that I simply didn't felt compelled to use the 28-200, while going out with the clumsy 28-85 is fun for me.

Yes, the 28-200 somehow gets the photo, and it's somehow OK for most occasions. But that's not enough for me. Rather I schlep the additional kilos of glass I love.

There is like 21 pages long image thread for this lens here, where we posted images and our thoughts about it: link.

There is like few other threads with the same question. In short - it is good enough for most people but YMMY.

Yeah, I’m often looking to cut weight lately, so maybe I will pick up the Tamron just for those situations when I know a harder hike is ahead of me.

I have one. It does come with some compromises. It weighs about the same or less than most of the 24-70/2.8 or 28-75/2.8 lenses. It doesn't have the ultimate image quality or perhaps focus speed of lenses costing 2-3x as much. At $650 on sale at times. you won't get as much back if bought with a "cash back" card nor do you end up having to pay as much in taxes. It is bigger and heavier and costs more than the 18-135 aps-c counterpart, etc.

So there are alternatives. But I find mine fits my interests and budget pretty well. and while I might like the idea of going to the classic f2.8 zooms, I don't "need," to.

I generally prefer compact/light primes, but when travelling internationally I prefer the Tamron zoom combo:

Tamron FE 17-28mm f2.8 & 28-200mm f2.8-5.6

Both offer good all round performance and excellent value for money.

It took me three tries to get a decently aligned 28-200 RXD. This one is close to my 24-105G when tested on a tripod, but the Sony lens has given much better results in normal hand-held use. I haven't checked if a firmware update has improved the Tamron's performance, but I do still have it. I used to like an 18-135 zoom on APS-C.

I don't uses multiple lenses very often. I also wish the 17-28 RXD went wider and my copy was better aligned.

I’m thinking I may pick one up and see how it goes. Looking at the other threads, I think it’ll probably meet my needs for stopped down use on a tripod. And I’ve been more than pleased with my 28-75, so I’m hopeful. The 28-200 plus 12-24g or Rokinon 18mm would be a sweet combo for hiking in the mountains.

I switched my Tamron 28-75 for a 28-200 as I was also finding it was being used stopped down often, and have been happy with the results. If speed and/or ultimate IQ is a priority, I'm reaching for one of my GM primes anyways.

I do love the 28-200 for what it is - a useful superzoom.
