p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Xpro3 face detect AF disables metering modes | |
I'm sure this is beating a dead horse for many of you, but I just discovered that if you use Face detect or any of the Eye detect AF modes, it disables the metering/photometry selection modes.
Up to this point I was using face detect in the OVF, and just dial in exposure compensation as I would always do as a film shooter based on my interpretation of the back lighting. I had left the meter mode in matrix, as I treat that as an avg pattern and in my experience that is pretty much how it behaves whether I am shooting Fuji or Nikon.
But yesterday I just thought why not use the spot meter mode for those backlit conditions, as I already had set up the button next to the shutter button for that. That's when I found out that Fuji disables metering choices if you use any of the face detect/eye detect modes!
Ok, that was the short version, the long version was I threw a tantrum, was convinced the camera was broken, actually read the manual and there was nothing there mentioning this, then as a last resort googled it and found a complaint about the Fuji medium format cameras doing this exact same thing!
The excuse for it was because when you are in face/eye detect mode, the camera automatically knows it should be metering for the face and so no problem, right? Wrong.
Xpro3 in Face/eye detect mode, matrix metering (unable to change):

Face/eye detect mode off, spot meter:

This to me seems really dumb and I do not understand why Fuji has done this.
FYI I am using the latest firmware - 1.31
