Monochrome Miscellany

As I'm sure is the case for many of you, I prefer to shoot/organize my photos in sets based on subject, location, etc. Nevertheless, over time I inevitably end up with a growing "Miscellaneous" folder of one-offs and misfits. In an effort to not let them sit unviewed in obscurity (and to revisit some fond memories), lately I've been trying to weed through some from the past few years and separate those worth keeping from those that aren't. Here are a few from that endeavor.

Any comments, critiques, mild insults, etc. are welcome. Thanks for looking!

Thanks! That was a quick snap from the side of the road in Lassen. I didn't think much of it at the time, but ended up liking it once I got home and converted it.

A very enjoyable set. #1 is lovely except for what look like bright blobs of clouds which could be cloned out. #6 is compelling, too.

Very nice set. All work with light in different ways, but 2, 3, 4, and 5 really stand out for me as similar in the use of low key high contrast putting sweet emphasis on the sunlit areas.

Wonderful B&W work. The light, just exquisite. B&W work for me is often hit or miss in terms of tonality. I find it can at times be difficult to avoid the "muddy" look, particularly in the mid tones. You've really nailed the tonality to convey the special and rich quality of the light in each one. Every image is amazing in its own right, and a diverse array of styles and moods.

But, that waterfall image though...WOW. OK, I took another look. Yeah, WOW.

A super set with gorgeous black and white processing. I really like the first one, but I would clone out the clouds which, to me, add nothing to the scene. The waterfall and the pond with the grass mounds are amazing, too!

Best regards, David

Good use of black and white, wonderful lighting, very moody.

I often avoid black and white for my own photos but these photos make me wonder if I should rethink that.

How to present photographs together is a dilemma I often face too. I have preferred photos as part of a series, both as audience and as photographer, but seems like the focus is often on the single image. Even here where users are encouraged to make new threads for photos instead of posting in an existing thread, users usually only post a single image.

Of course on my website, I have to present photos together as part of a gallery/album, there is no page just for one photo, so I have no choice anyway. I think these photos fit together well, part of a greater whole, each photo helps to enhance the other photos, so that is an achievement as well. I didn't realize they were "misfits" or "one-offs" until I read the post more carefully.
