I was wondering, if Nikon is gonna answer to that challenge, and how soon.
Fuji is coming with X-H2 this month, according to the rumors, so the aps-c world will become interesting in near future.

It is good news for Nikon users if the R7 is popular as there shoud be some DX competition.
The D500 is discontinued and I think the D7500 is almost EOL as well.

The 40MP APS-C stacked sensor from Sony reportedly being used in the Fuji X is more exciting.
-40MP stacked APS-C sensor
-30fps e shutter only
-Z9 AF module
Pair with 600f4 TC VRS and 800f6.3 pf is my birding gear wet dream.

What is the source of the Nikon with Sony 40MP sensor information? I didn't see it recently at [NR] for example.

40 MP APS-C sensor has the same pixel density as 90 MP FX. I wonder how noisy such a sensor could be (at ambient temperature).

You have to look beyond NR.

Don’t know. But I rarely want to go beyond iso3200 on the current Nikon 45MP sensor.
Let say if useable ISO1600 on a 40MP aps-c sensor, I would rather take the 1 stop hit in ISO but get 50% more reach for my birding.
This is the same reason why I never went D4/D5/D6 even though their noise performance is better at the pixel level than D800/D850/Z7/Z9. I rather have the extra reach from the higher MP sensor and keep my iso low.
Besides, the extra pixels allows me to use smaller lens and keep the bare lens IQ without any TC. I don’t need 1.4x TC on the 600mm to get to 850mm f5.6 that degrade the lens IQ a bit. I can use a 600f4 bare lens on a higher MP camera and shoot at f4 and crop for the reach. YMMV.

I don’t see a 24MP aps-c sensor a viable option for me since I already have a 20MP aps-c in my Z9. 30MP maybe. But 40MP, I’ll definitely swipe the credit card for it.

I'm not in the photo or sensor industry and don't understand how the Sony sensors get into Fuji products first and then how they end up in Nikon products.

I’m not either but Nikon had used Sony Imaging modified sensors in the past. It’s not rare for certain company to sell their tech for usage by other company. Ie. Sony uses OLED panels from LG Display for their OLED TVs. And LG also has their own OLED TVs from their own LG Display division.

The first thing to understand is that Sony semi-conductor, of which Nikon and Fuji have been large customers for many years, is a separate company from Sony cameras.

Cheers,

I understand that Sony is a supplier to Nikon, but I'm not seeing the nexus for a Nikon Z DX body with that particular sensor. 7680x5120 is ~40MP and meets the lower criteria for native 8K video, so that type of sensor makes sense in the market. It also has an advantage over the slightly smaller Canon cropped sensor size.
