I heard him drumming as I was hiking through the woods. I tried to find him on the drumming log, but once I was spotted, he stopped his pursuit for love and began his quest for food and shelter.
To my surprise, this grouse became interested in me and started to cautiously follow my hike through the woods. Because of this unique behavior, I managed to photograph him in some interesting light.

Good job Bruce! Those guys are really tough to approach on their drumming log. Cool that you got close enough to make that first good shot and double cool that he then decided to follow you around. I enjoyed your images. Steve

You are right about the species. I have seen them many times in boreal forests, but they flush quickly and are rarely visible without branches everywhere.

Thanks... I agree 100%. Prairie grouse are easy to photograph (sharp-tail and prairie chickens), but the boreal species always occur alone and surrounding by clutter.
