p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Last Tree

This tough little tree grows on the NW most tip of the lower 48 on Cape Flattery. My wife and I timed the short hike to arrive just before sunset, then made it back to the car in the dusk. There were only a couple of other people there, and we had it to ourselves for the actual sunset.

I have a thing for singular trees, esp. weather beaten mountain/coastal specimens that bend to the dominant winds. As the sunset developed I moved around the small area (taking care not to step too close to the edge ~100 ft. drop off either side!) shooting with both my A7rII + 24-105mm and iPhone 13 Pro.

The second shot is my favorite. In the second image I think there is a good balance to the elements, the lone foreground tree, the left side rock/island, and the right-side setting sun and interesting cloud. My eye sweeps in a zig-zag from foreground to background, right, left, right. I also like the color and texture of the water. Nice work !

Nice set Jim. I’ve not been up there but looks like a worthy location, and you captured it very well.

You just made that Tree's day with all of the attention that you gave to it. Considering the harsh life that it must live on the edge of that cliff braving gale force winds. My favorites are the last two, though all are beautiful! Excellent work!

The second one for me. I especially like the framing and the light in the cloud center left in the background.

Nicely done....for trees that take a beating, that's the spot

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm surprised I haven't seen millions of pictures of this cool little tree since it's right past the viewing platform at the end of a very easy hike/walk. I suppose many people are put off by the drive (quite a ways from the national park campgrounds) and the $20 fee you are supposed to pay the tribe to drive in their reservation. It is good for a year, but most visitors will only use it once.

My wife likes the closeup while I'm partial to the last B&W.

Jim, nice looking set. The second image is outstanding. Like the way you composed it and glad you didn’t remove the shadows too much. Good work 👍🏻
