Anytime I am near Mono Lake in California I have to make time to photograph it. This particular trip I was heading home to Idaho after spending some time in Death Valley. It was late afternoon and I had a long way to go but there is something about this lake that is very magical and hard to resist. The sky was clear and it seemed foolish on my part to waste the time and expect some beautiful evening color, but I am glad that I stopped. The late evening color came through. It was subtle, soft and seductive! What more could I expect! Mother Nature is truly generous to me!

Hi David
Very nice series with varied treatments. I actually find #1 the most appealing. I love the colours of the earth's shadow and you have portrayed them beautifully here. The foreground is perhaps a little too blue for my taste but I get what you were going for, with the contrast of the "blue" sand and golden grasses. Very pleasing image to me. I like that section of Mono Lake. Far less visited, not easy to photograph but so picturesque.

Look forward to seeing some more of your work.

I couldn't get to Mono Lake when I visited California just pre-Covid...photos like these really make me want to go again and make it this time. Very well done.

The light always seems to do something different with either/or the water or the tufas everytime that I visit. May the light be always in your favor the next time that you make it to Mono Lake!

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts on this series. Mono Lake is kind of out of the way from most California destinations, unless you happen to be driving by on your way to somewhere else, such as Death Valley NP or Lake Tahoe. It is definitely worth the stop, especially for evening or morning light images.

I've been to Mono Lake a zillion times and I've never seen it bright blue. Is this new because of something it the water or because of the drouth or?

these are beautiful and I'd love to be able to shoot this location.
Love that you have shared both color and BW interpretation of this great area.

Bear with me here....I hang on Critique mostly..
Second image appears to have some processing artifact around the "heads" of those Halloween friendly spires, with additional areas noted the remainder of these vertical elements and along the horizontal edge/water line of the rocks on the right lower third.
Third gives the impression of a tilted horizon, leaning down right but may be an artifact of the receding shoreline. Tough call whether to do something about it but for me its a strong feature.

Hi, Mr. Gale: Thank you for your comment. As you can probably tell, this photograph was taken after sundown and the shadows were taking over. I adjusted the white balance for this and perhaps, should have adjusted a little more. It was an artistic choice to leave it like this. I appreciate your observation and will keep this in mind when I post here in the future.

Hi, Scptt: Thank you for your critique. After looking more closely at the 2nd image, I have to agree with you that there are some processing problems. I reworked the image and hopefully it addresses most of my earlier errors. On the 3rd image, I see what you are saying about the horizon, but the tufa's would appear tilted if I adjusted the background to appear even across the horizon. I think it is an optical illusion that is taking place here. Again, thank you for your time to critique and for your kind thoughts on this amazing area.
