I went out today and shot with both 400/2.8s+tcx2 and 800pf. Unfortunately my internet at home has broken cable and it wont be fixed until tomorrow so no picture to share yet. But 400/2.8s + tcx2 does focus faster. For bif, it is almost instaneous but 800pf takes about 1-2 second longer. For perched bird, eye detection is engaged sooner on 400/2.8s +tc. Now, if I dont have 400/2.8s, I would say that 800pf is pretty fast. 100-400 may be a bit faster as well but I am not 100% sure. I whined a bit to my local dealer about this and he said that at the moment, 800pf is optimized for longer distance and the closer you are, the slower it will get. Today, bee eaters were mostly 10-15m distance. However, he said that there most likely will be firmware to update af later. However, I have no idea how true this is....Show more →
I think we are starting to see why this is a $6500 USD lens. Those like me who assumed a price of $10,000 plus prior to release also presumed it would perform as good or better than an E FL prime lens Z mount equivalent given the S designation. And I think we’re starting to see, that instead, it actually performs like an 800 mm equivalent of the 500 PF.
Curiously enough, I think Polin’s first look video is panning out to provide the most accurate representation of the lens. In that video, you can see the lens hunting a bit. And you can also see some less than stellar bokeh present in some of the pics. It was, of course, a super sharp and hand holdable 800 mm lens, though.
