p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Damned To Hell

A 36 mile jet boat ride in 2016 up the Snake River in Hell's Canyon enabled me to create the following images of that amazing canyon. In the spring time and early summer an enormous amount of water is released from the dam into the lower Snake River which produces class 4 and class 5 rapids. Not for the faint of heart if you are on an inflatable raft or even a small fishing boat. The river may not look very wide, but sitting out in the middle of it in a boat or raft, it feels enormous. The river is up to 100 feet deep in places and is home to some ancient/pre-historic sturgeon that can grow up to 14 feet long. In early 2022, Idaho biologists caught three 500 pound sturgeon in excess of 10 feet long, each. This was very unusual because it had been 10 years since they had snagged one. The sturgeon are only catch and release. Anglers also love to fish for salmon and steelhead.

Thank you for looking.

David, I especially love that first image, the leading lines and the layers of canyon make for a wonderful composition!

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and support! Hell's Canyon is a unique place and incredibly beautiful, especially in the late spring and early summer when everything is still green on the mountains.

Best regards, David

Hi, Ross! Thank you for your thoughts on this series. In that first image you can see that the river current is moving very swiftly. It takes a strong engine on a boat to go upstream against the current of this mighty river. The jet boat that I was on had two huge diesel engines powering its propellers. I've been enjoying your recent posts, too! You have an incredible eye for composition and light!

Best regards, David

Hi, Rajan! Thank you for your comment! The dam was quite impressive, especially from the level of the water. I am happy that you liked those images. Have a great day!

Thank you, Bill. It was quite a challenge photographing from the rear of a moving boat. For raw, almost untouched beauty, Hell's Canyon delivers!

Best regards, David

Thank you so much for your great comment! Glad you liked the image of the steep canyon walls. There are not many places that one can hike down to the river due to either incredibly rough terrain between the canyon rim and the river or because there is no beach; the canyon goes right down to the water. Have a great day!

Best regards, David

David - You did a wonderful job on these! You took me right there to the river in the canyon. And what a helluva canyon it is! Very well done, both the artistry and the story-telling. Thanks for posting them! Regards, Steve
