If it matters, the Tamron 35-150 IQ is very good, but not in the same regard as the 70-200GM MKII. The GM is sharper, has better color and contrast. The GM also has much faster AF and can handle 30FPS where the Tamron cannot (max is 10 fps in my tests with the A1). I will also say the Tamron is front heavy, poorly balanced. Not a fun lens to use for more than an hour or so. The new GM is superbly balanced ,with elements shifted toward the camera body it handles like a dream. End of the day , pick the focal length that works for you...but if your picky about IQ, then a two lense solution is probably better...Show more →
Thanks for this, your point on balance is something I cant tell without actually trying the 35-150, I have tried the 70-200GMii and it feels suprisingly light on the camera.
The idea of shifting lens elements closer to your hands DOES have a big impact, The zeiss SF 8x42 and 8x32 employs this idea to greate effect.
I will dump some research here incase someone finds it useful.
First, I really doubt a 35-150 will replace the 35GM for me on the wide end.
The corners of the 35-150 @ 35, f/2 and f/2,8 https://youtu.be/e2rzoRugeQo?t=315 looks significantly softer than the 35GM @ 1.4 to my eyes https://youtu.be/8Bd4spKh6vE?t=184
From the-digital-picture's samples,
35-150 vs 35GM @ f/2

The 35GM is significantly better.... but no suprises here tbh, the 35GM is one of the best primes around. Even at f/1.4 the 35GM is still sharper.
35-150 vs 70-200GMii

The 35-150 appears to be better in the corners at 70/2.8
But at 100/2.8, there is a reversal, where the 70-200GMii appears to be better
Unfortunately there is no sample of the 35-150 at 135mm, but we can see that the 70-200 at 135 and 200mm beats the 35-150 at 150mm.
This is a similar result to this review, where the corners of the 35-150 @ 150/2.8 also look soft https://youtu.be/e2rzoRugeQo?t=378
35-150 vs 28-75 + 70-180
Centre & Corner: 28-75 > 35-150 @ 35.2.8 https://youtu.be/imdLo25Sh_E?t=790

Corner & Centre: 28-75 == 35-150 @ 50/2.8 https://youtu.be/imdLo25Sh_E?t=829
Corner & Midframe: 28-75 < 35-150 @ 70/2.8 https://youtu.be/imdLo25Sh_E?t=878
Corner: 70-180 > 35-150 @ 70/2.8 https://youtu.be/imdLo25Sh_E?t=917
Corner: 70-180 > 35-150 @ 100/2.8 https://youtu.be/imdLo25Sh_E?t=955
No test at 150mm vs 150mm, seems to be optically similar 150mm vs 180mm. Both dont do so well on the long end.

70-200GMii vs 70-180
At 70mm, the Tamron is sharper
At 100mm, they seem very close
At 135mm and beyond, the Sony is sharper.

70-200GMii vs 135GM

Incredibly the samples at f/2.8 are closer than the zoom has any right to be. I suppose the 70-200GMii performs the best at 135mm.
