p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Any way to turn off EVF proximity sensor on R5/R6?

I have been searching for about 30min and can't find any solutions as to how to turn off the proximity sensor on the R5/R6. I've tried all modes, settings,Eco, etc. that I can find.

The best I can do with the camera settings is to get the EVF turned off 1 minute after I take a photo....all while the AF/IS motors are humming and burning the battery for 1 minute.

Note - my cameras are in a water housings with plexiglass right behind the EVF. The EVF sensor thinks an eye is there but it's plexiglass. So for you to test without a housing, the best way to test would be to take a photo and hold camera to your eye and see how long it takes to turn EVF off. Should be 1 minute. I need as much battery as I can.

What's interesting is if you put your finger over the sensor it won't turn off after 15 seconds. But, black tape will. So the workaround is to put a piece of black tape over it and it does the job.

Putting tape on it is not ideal because I don't need the sensor turned off all the time. Let me know if anyone else can get this to work without using black tape.

Do you need the EVF at all under water? You can assign a button to switch between EVF and LCD, and just never turn it on.

The LCD would waste even more battery and I need EVF for shooting surfing at the surface to maximize battery life. So ideal the ideal method is to shoot with EVF and have it turn off after 15 seconds. The only way I can figure out how to do this is with black tape over the sensor.

Unless you find a way that works I think this is the only solution or best case it turns off after 1 min with camera settings. Something needs to be held up against the EVF to simulate my plexiglass for testing, otherwise it will appear to work. If I take the plexiglass away it works, but that's obviously not an option.

The EVF is 5.6 million dots and the LCD 2 million. And in modes like Eshutter the EVF is at a default 120fps refresh rate. The EVF might be using more power (+ cpu) than the entire rest of the camera.

I turn the LCD into the camera body and have the DOF preview button set to toggle between EVF and LCD. If I don’t want the EVF nor the LCD, I hit the button to go to LCD.

Most water (surf) housings have limited control, so the buttons I can control are for critical settings like SS, Aperture, ISO, exp comp, etc. With that said, the tape over the sensor turns the camera off in 5 seconds now whether in the housing or not. The best I could do in the housing without the tape is powering off after 1 minute. So for my situation the tape is saving the day because there is no other way around it.

I called Canon support and they confirmed there is no way to turn off the sensor. He submitted a request for this feature and hopefully they'll add it in a future firmware update.

I use the DOF preview to switch between EVF and rear display (which is turned inward), but you can set that to any button you want in your setup. Find a button you have access to but don’t use.

In the operations section on this page more than halfway down, looks like |O|…

Yellow menus page 3 - Screen/Viewfinder display. I used the AF point selection button to toggle back and forth but I found it too irritating so I'm back to having it set to Auto. I don't have an actual need for it.

I never found the DOF button very comfy so I used AF point selection button for that.

I don't have spare buttons in the housing and that's the reason I started the thread. When not in the housing, all my buttons are assigned to more important functions than saving battery life so the black tape works best in and out of the housing for me. I would hate to waste a button on this, and I would hate to have to press a button to make my camera EVF turn off quickly.

I use my DOF button for selecting crop mode and find it's a very quick solution to switch back and forth. It's cool these bodies are so customizable as everyone can pick what works best for them.

Have you considered setting up the camera for the housing including your customized buttons (like AF point selection button being the switch between displays) and storing that under C1? Then you can have the camera set up the way you want any time you don't have it in the housing, then switch to C1 when you do. You basically can have a completely different setup defined this way (or 2 or 3 of these) all different from how you want to shoot any other time.

My C1 has completely different button configurations with Manual mode active, etc, and then my Av,Tv,M have a different configuration of buttons.
