I named this poor guy "Baldy". I felt so sorry for him because the flies just wouldn't leave him alone. He was clearly VERY agitated and I could tell he was on the edge based on his actions. You can see it in his eyes.
Sadly whatever condition he has that has pushed him to this point means that it's just a matter of time before he becomes a "bad bear" should one of the cell phone photographers get too close to him. I stayed an extra safe distance away from this guy and even then he kept pausing to give me the look. At the time I wanted to believe he was just looking at me as if he were asking for help, but I know better.
Just one week ago today a bear in the neighboring campground down the road tore into a families tent in the early morning hours and scratched the mother and 3 yr old daughter. There were reports of dog food in their tent. The father scared it off but sadly the park rangers trapped and killed the bear. I'm nearly certain it wasn't this guy because of the distance but the news did make me think of him. Hope he's doing better.
The news report stated that the bear exhibited extreme food-conditioned behavior and lack of fear of humans.
Please folks. Remember a fed bear is a dead bear. They almost always mean no harm to humans and are simply looking for food. They are opportunistic hunters so if they are trained that humans have food, they WILL come looking for a snack with no fear. Then they end up dead because of the foolishness of humans.
