p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Seeking X-mount 135mm AF prime for live performance photography

Looking for 135mm autofocus (AF) prime for Fuji X.

I’ve shot live performance for years using full frame equipment. Lenses were relatively fast 50, 85, 135, and 200mm AF primes.

Now moving to Fuji X with crop factor. I’ve found a great selection of fast autofocus primes around 35, 56, and 85mm. Nothing around 135 though.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Only way would be to adapt, using Fringer. Canon have a pair of well regarded 135s, and there is a Sigma 135/1.8, probably both Canon and Nikon mounts. Nikons AF 135 is screw drive AF so wont af with Fringer

If longer focal length there is always that 200mm f2.

Thanks, got it. I will probably go this route.

I’ll do some research, but wondering if you or anyone else here has experience with Fringer/Canon regarding autofocus on Fuji? I’ll be mounted on a X-S10 and possibly X-T4.

90mm f2, what's wrong with it. Gets you 135 on your APS-C. AF is fast. Personally I wish there was 105mm f1.4 option.

Agreed, a 105mm f1.4 would be nice to have. I suspect Sigma might eventually have one.

As you point out, the Fuji 90mm F2 is a great option to make it to 135 equiv fov. So might be the Viltrox 85 F1.8 II.

Unfortunately those don’t get me to the 200mm equivalent FF.

From the OP recall I shot full frame with 50, 85, 135, and 200.

Now I need to replicate those FOV’s with Fuji X.

Looking for a Fuji 135 unicorn :-)

Great shot. I love my Canon 135mm f2 + Fringer + X-H1. I don’t own X-S10 but it should be even better. The sigma 135mm 1.8 looks good too but I don’t own one.

50-140mm f2.8 can probably replace most of those lenses, only it is f2.8 but you didn't mention aperture. If dead set on primes and need that 200 equivalent, then look at the 135mm f2, 135mm f1.8 already mentioned. Heck I am thinking 135mm f1.8 for use on my GFX as a poor man's 105mm f1.4.

Thanks! That image was shot with a Canon 135!

Thanks for relaying your experience with the Fringer and Canon 135 F2. I loved my mine as well, but sold it several years ago in a previous photo life…

I will consider buying a used copy plus a Fringer.

Good input! I should have mentioned aperture. F2.8 is just a bit slow for the type of events I shoot, but I’d still love to have that 50-140 zoom in my bag :-)

I have the Fuji 90, and it is so good you can crop from it happily up towards 135 equiv. I recently did some tests against the 55-200, at a rugby match. The higher ISO needed for the slower lens meant the cropped 90 shots were sharper. The 50-140 doesn't attract me, not enought longer or faster than the 90 or 55-200 to warrant its cost and bulk for me, with 1.4 tc its only half a stop faster at 200 than the 55-200.
I just bought a Fringer Nikon to Fuji, looking forward to seeing what I can do with it, a good modern 70-200 looks attractive, as well as longer, to replace my old Nikon stuff.

55-200mm is a nice lens, had one but 50-140mm is way better in AF department. I should know, shot some sports. 55-200 is a f5.6 lens so no go for anything inside. In my book, even f2.8 inside is a no go lens but then based on example shot of OP, 50-140mm can do that performance thing easily. OP is not shooting cheerleading or dance competitions IMHO.

55-200 is f/4.8 max at 200mm. I would certainly prefer faster for indoors, and 2.8 is as best you can hope for without spending a fortune and putting up with a lot of weight, and having so little DoF as to be useless. I have 80-200 2.8 for my Nikons, plus 135 and 180/2.8 prime lenses, all owned for a LONG time! 2.8 with good high ISO performance such as my X-t3 has is good (my Nikon is older so isn't up with my X-t3 there). A modern 70-200 2.8 would be mnore useful than the 50-140, and there are plenty about relatively cheap, hopefully the Fringer will do OK with them, There are good reports.
The Canon 135/ 2.8 and f/2 are quite old lenses, I would need to see evidence that they would do any better than the extremely good Fuji 90 f/2 cropped,

Gerry

Tehcnically yes 50-200mm is f4.8 but I consider it to be f5.6 lens. It is 2 stops slower than f2.8 lens. Why do people think f2.8 DoF is thin? I can shoot 200mm f2 @f2 and make sure the whole body is in focus. Heck I can do the same at f1.4 with 105mm and have no problems with DoF. You can always stop down if shooting things where you need to get more than 1 person in focus. Weight wise 50-140mm is nothing. I say this as a small handicapped person. I can easily shoot that lens for a whole day and I actually did for a long time when I shot baseball games with it. I used to carry 5dmk3/300mm f2.8 along with it. Heavy 400mm f2.8 is heavy, 500/600mm f4 is heavy.

There is (or was) also a Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 zoom in Canon EF mount, if you can find one. It's bit short on your 135mm focal length requirement, but it might be interesting nonetheless.

Yes! That Sigma is a smokin’ sharp lens. My son had one before he switched to Fuji. It was so heavy his arms bulked up just attaching and detaching from the camera ;-)

Thanks! That was indeed the Canon 135 F2. I think I was shooting a 5DM2 at that time.

That lens and a Canon full-frame DSLR was a great combo.
