If the the new 24-70 GM II is nice size and good handling with reasonably good optics, it will be a well liked lens. Wide end down to 24mm is so important in many 24-70mm applications, from reportage to landscape. Tamron 35-150mm is simply a different kind of lens.

The weight between the two lenses cannot be ignored...especially if the 24-70 II is even lighter. If I were to shoot events with zooms, I'd have two cameras, one with a 24-70 and the other with a 70-200.

Here is what I think we can expect:

A lighter lens. The current lens weighs almost 900g (almost 2 lbs.). The Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 weighs 470g. The Tamron 28-75 II weighs 540g. Yeah this lens is wider at the wide end, but it still needs to be lighter to compete. I would guess 700g or so for this version.

More aperture blades. The 24-70 f/2.8 GM has 9 aperture blades. Almost all the GM lenses have 11. Expect this lens to use 11.

Better sharpness at long end. The 24-70 f/2.8 GM is a very good lens, but the general consensus was it wasn't quite as good at the long end. I expect Sony to address that.

Better bokeh. The 24-70 GM has pretty nice bokeh, but Sony has made very good improvements in the bokeh of most of their lenses since introducing this lens. I expect some improvement on that dimension.

Lower copy variation, but higher copy variation than prime lenses. There is just no way around zoom lenses be more complex than prime lenses and with that complexity comes copy variation. Sony has been making improvement on that, however, so I expect less copy variation than the current 24-70 f/2.8.

A higher price. Sony has not been shy about raising the price of their GM lenses. I expect that as well.

Smaller, lighter, faster, sharper, more expensive, and tons of breathing. That is pretty much every new GM lens in a nutshell.

This lens will be in a completely different price range than consumer grade 28-70 lenses.

I think it is the single most needed lens in Sony's line up and glad to finally see it come out.

I am not contemplating the lens however as I sold my 24-70GM two years ago and bought a Tamron 28-75 G3 and have never even mounted the lens on my camera.

If I shot weddings or events for a living of course but I am a hobbyist with every GM lens except this one and prefer primes. Or I guess I do since the Tamron has sat for one and a half years.

With my A1 (previously RIV) and higher mp version on the horizon I find that I prefer the speed and IQ of two primes in a combination of 20 through110 depending upon what I am shooting that day satisfy my needs.

As we hopefully enter the final stretch before announcement, any guesses on size weight and other things?
My Guess:
Weight 750-800g, 775g if I have to choose a single number
size: 4.7" long 3.5" dia
Cost $2400 US
Sharpest 24-70 in existence
2 linear motors

I'll play... Based on the leaked picture, I think you're very close. It looks a lot like the 16-35 f/2.8 when closed. So I'll go with this:

Size: 4.6" long closed; 3.5" diameter
Weight: 660 - 770g; 750 for a single number
Not stabilized: $2,399 USD; stabilized $2,599 USD
Sharpness and color close the new 70-200 f/2.8 GM II

Like the new 70-200, will be best in class ... and you'll have to pay dearly for that!

I like this wish list.
Also wish I could get it before mid-June .. if so, I could see upgrading from the A7IV to the A1 so I could get a really good 2x crop so it becomes a 24-140/2.8

Darn, now I probably have to buy this sucker that looks too good.

After the announcement.
I am going to pre order it in hopes of getting it for my honeymoon in Saint Barth. It is a lens that would certainly be handy I think my Voigtlander 12, 24-70 GM II and 100-400GM would be a nice trio to take with my A1. May toss in a fast prime for low light like a 24 GM or 35 but really not needed with todays ISO capabilities IMO.

My 1.5 year old unused Tamron G2 or 3 which ever the latest one is would be even handier from a weight standpoint but being able to get down to 24mm trumps that for me. 24mm usually will handle the low end for me 28mm doesn't really cut it.

If the IQ truly is noticeably better which I have no reason to believe it won't be it will find a home for all I one uses like this when I only want to carry one lensnoticeably

Yes, it’s light for it’s class, but I drew a line on getting lenses with 82mm filter threads years ago.
Tamron had the right idea with 67mm filter threads on most of their FE zoom lenses.
To me, there’s a point where the bulk of a lens compromises the convenience of carrying it and using it. I believe a lot of people tend to leave bulky lenses at home, in preference for the convenience of more compact lenses instead (like a couple of compact/faster primes).

I prefer compact prime combos like the Voigtlander 21mm f3.5 and Zony 55mm f1.8, or a combo like the Samyang 35mm f2.8 and Samyang 75mm f1.8

Doesn't the new 70-200 GM II basically have zero breathing? And it's also parfocal.

Zooms are not for everyone.

The new 24-70 GM mk2 is about the size as 24-105mm G, but it is different class from a set of smallest primes.

About that size yes! But with a 82mm filter like the 16-35GM. I feel like they are making a right decision by reducing the weight by about 20% compared to V1.

Just to clarify (if it wasn’t clear in my post), I own two Tamron zooms as well as a set of compact primes. I won’t compare or comment about the “class” of an unreleased or untested lens vs compact primes, just yet.

Seeing this just makes me want a 28-60 G(M) lens so badly. Give us that top tier quality in a sub 450g package please, Sony. Still, Sony is basically Wayne Szalinski at this point. Very impressive.

If that's the MFD at 70mm it's actually a 1:1 macro. Wooooooooow. Hard to imagine that's the MFD at 24mm, as this is pretty unimpressive.
