I have one on back order I'm not NPS... just sold my 600mm Fl so I guess it will be yard work for a while...I thought maybe the 600mm s would be ready soon..maybe two years yard work !

I don't know what's going on, but it looks like a global thing. So maybe they found a firmware issue and want to fixed it first. Or maybe they frist start shipping in the new financial year beginning 1. April. It feels a little bit strange, that you really don't get any information about the delivery timeline.
Luckily I still have my 400/2.8 E FL.

Nikon did issue a letter in Japan that says the 400f2.8S delivery can take up to 6 months.

I have a feeling it'll be another year before I have the lens in hand. I ordered day 1 of the announcement, not NPS (have been waiting 3 months for the NPS application to get approved too...)

My NPS application was approved in 4 weeks. You should email that to follow up.

I don't know how long it'll take for the West to get a 400f2.8S.
The used 600E and 400E are looking real good though if you really need one right away. I've seen 400E going for around 7K.
I keep telling myself that I don't need it right now(and I really don't) but I can't stop looking at 600E while waiting for that elusive shipment email from Nikon.
I got a dose of that excitement last week when I got a Nikon shipment email but it turns out to be the EN-EL18D battery.

I'm right there with you... I've passed up a few 600E offers already. I think I could make use of the lens in the next year and a half (the time I think it would take to get a 600S), and honestly couldn't probably sell it for a minimal loss (less than the cost of a two week rental).
Am I talking myself into a purchase??

Get your butt on the NPS approval. And loan out the gear you need.
They should be shipping out the 100-400S today to me for 2 week evaluation. This will tell me a couple things. 1) The 1.4x TCz and 2.0TCz that I bought are good or I have to return them. 2) Can I live with 400mm and 560mm. I'm not really banking on using 2xTC but I bought it anyways because it was in stock.
I also plan on requesting the 600E once it's warbler season(May/June) if I don't receive the 400f2.8S by then.

I thought that letter was a bit vague & ambiguous. It did not state if the 6-month delivery timeline applied to NPS members who placed Day-1 release orders.

I think NPS day one preorder will be fulfilled on first batch when the lens get to the US or should be fulfilled pretty quickly when they have stock. I just don’t think they have shipped any production model to the West.
I’m not sure why not a single 400f2.8S has landed in the US. Maybe it was shipped on the Felicity Ace that sunk along with the $500mil of luxury cars last month.

Even Ricci(Nikon employee) is quiet about it after posting a picture of it along with 600E and 400E in his instagram post two months ago promising he’ll be doing comparison of the 3 lenses. That’s probably the most concerning thing since I thought he was pretty quick to post detailed reviews and comparison of other S lenses.

He is in Hong Kong while doing that review and did say “the more I shoot with it the more I want it.”
So still no production 400S in the West that I know of to date.
