p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mergansers mating ?

This was my first time photographing these birds so I really don't know much about them. Anyone with more knowledge feel free to jump in. Not sure if this was just practice or an actual mating that took place. Photos were taken at the end of December in southern California. I'm pretty sure the first two shots are part of the courtship ritual. In any event, doesn't look like a lot of fun for the ladies.

Very nice set and yes, I do believe this is mating . At least it looking the same as other ducks I have seen and it looks like the poor lady is going to drown

And the male wasn't even close to be gentle to the female... What's up with that? Well, for all we know the female likes it that way

. I better stop it here....

Great images, Gary! I am officially envious. I have been photographing mergansers there for a few years and I have not been able to capture their matting rituals, not even a single time....

Nice sequence. Male ducks tend to be rather aggressive with their females, though completely submerging her seems a bit much!
