What do you guys think? Is it worth $1600?

I wanted a monitor like this but with miniled/oled and ProMotion but that won’t come anytime soon.

I also wonder if it is good for post processing of photos (in capture One)

no, the monitor is over-priced for what you get. $400 extra just for the stand that is height adjustable
A BenQ, Eizo, Dell, Nec, or other 4K monitor makes more sense in my view.

My Dell monitor and HP monitors both have height adjustment feature for free. Don't pay that Apple tax.

Now, the Mac Studio looks like an awesome computer. Just not he Mac Studio monitor.

Likely the exact same as using a 27" iMac retina screen.

Do you currently use a Mac computer?

The Studio computer does look pretty alright, but it seems that the 20-core version is a bit expensive compared to the 10-core (apples to apples).

Jeff,

Yes, the 20-core option is for video pro's or those that need serious computing.

I just sold my Dell XPS Windows computer. I am moving to a Mac Studio M1MAX, 32 GB and will use my Dell Ultrasharp 4K photo monitor.

Thanks: I'm not that familiar with the exact quality of the 27'' iMac retina screen, however, I know that a lot of photographers use it for their work. The question is, how good is the new Apple Studio Display if it comes to Adobe RGB?
I came a cross some figures for the LG 27 inch Modell for Mac and it was only about 90% or so... So far I couldn't find any information with regard to the new Studio Display.

And yes, I have the M1 Mac mini. Good machine

Ah, so you've paid that Apple tax (as many of us have)!

I'll be curious to see the specs once it's out in the wild. I'm currently using a 2020 iMac 5k i9 along with a Thunderbolt display, but am ready to move to M1 as soon as possible (editing large panos is still a strain despite how 'new' the computer is, and my new 16" MacBook Pro runs circles around it, even with half the ram). The Thunderbolt display has been admirable, but I'm ready for two matching 27" displays. Considering I paid $900 for the TD two years after it was discontinued, I'll seriously consider Apple Studio Displays once the Studio computer comes (in May!...). Hopefully we'll know more within a week or so.

Cheers,

Jeff

Probably picking two of them up today. Biggest thing for me is my MacBook pro’s screen having the same color and calibration as my desktop monitors. While I love my dell U27, the matte screen and color is always a bit different. Having a glossy desktop monitor that is the same as my local workflow will be awesome.

Personally for photos I like matte displays.

Or for anything. So much depends on the lighting in the working area and spending many thousands to relocate lighting just for a shiny monitor or a shiny TV is more than a bit annoying. I have a shiny laptop because that is the only viable option and light reflections can be brutal in some hotels.

Alright. Only 86% of Adobe RGB covered. So for photographers who want to print not the right choice.

Or is DCI-P3 the/a new standard also for photos and printing?

That is a video color space. It is smaller than aRGB for the most part.

REC 2020 is a video display standard as well, but has not been adopted yet as far as I know and of course, there are no monitors capable of displaying or even coming close to that full gamut.

Thanks, I should have been more clear: Display P3 (which seems to be closely related to DCI P3). It seems that it's not only Apple's standard but a standard in many mobile devices. It seems to replace or to have replaced(?) sRGB.

Complete rip-off in my opinion. Looks like you're mostly paying for fancy buzz words and the built in speakers.

Deal breakers for me:

- No 14bit 3D built in LUT
- No way to hardware calibrate it (this is absolutely critical for anyone serious about color or for multiple displays)
- Can't even cover the Adobe RGB colorspace
- No matte coating
- Annoying proprietary power cord

At least the stand isn't a $999 USD option this time around...

The monitor is also suspiciously similar to a cheaper LG monitor that has near identical specs and port configuration, and Apple sources panels from LG.

Apple is not a brand that makes the best of anything (performance-wise) for serious photographers/videographers. They prioritize aesthetics over everything else, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you know what you're actually buying don't fall into their marketing traps.

I am a big fan of some Apple products, such as their iPads, however anything computer related is always nowhere near as good as their marketing department would have you believe on the launch day presentation.
