p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Environmental Endangered Lands-A Project

I’m working on an assignment for a local government who purchases and manages Environmentally Endangered Lands for preservation in urban areas across South Florida. These environments range from coastal wetlands to inland pine forests, and generally include rare and threatened flora and fauna. It’s been a fun, if not challenging exercise to capture seemingly “ordinary” sights in a manner which will engage the general public in discussion on future preservation and funding through tax revenue. I’m just working through the first two days of shooting, and thought I’d share a few of my favorite images with the good folks here, thanks for looking ;-)

Shot on Sony a1, with Sony FE20mm f1.8, Samyang 45 f1.8 and Sony FE200-600mm

My favorite image so far, sunrise along coastal mangrove forest:

A slash pine forest recovering from a recent “burn”:

I *think* a Red Tail Hawk juvenile among the Pine Forest:

An endangered fern found only in South Florida:

I really enjoyed this set of images and I'm envious of your location I can't imagine many things I'd rather do than explore terrain such as this (with camera gear, of course) and attempt to document its natural glory.

Good luck with your assignment. Hopefully you'll post some more images as you progress.

Thanks so much, really appreciate your comments! And careful what you wish for, the mosquitos and no-seeums were HORRIBLE during the morning seashore shoot

Wow! I'm really digging the second and last photo!
I'm very curious what lens that was shot on.

Looks like a great project! I lived in Naples for 6 years and one of my regrets is not focusing more energy on landscape photography while I was there. There are some unique habitats that are very interesting down there... If you're in for an adventure rent a kayak and go down Turner River into the Everglades sometime (in the winter only unless you are heavily protected from mosquitos.)

Awesome, thanks! Me too, I’ve been so focused on wildlife photography that I’ve forgotten how uniquely different and satisfying landscape photography can be!

The thought of critters you'd encounter had crossed my mind but I got lost in the beauty of the images. Summertime in Oklahoma is notorious for mosquitoes.

By the way, that first image is fantastic. I'm curious - did you use fill flash?

We’ll hey there from a fellow Okie, grew up in Edmond OK !

No fill flash, did a bunch of brackets with intention on HDR blending, but the Sony a1 has such great DR I ended up just using a single exposure lowering the highlights and boosting the shadows for the final result
