I already have A1 but have OM-1 on order.

Who knows if I end up keep it or not but just wanted to throw it out there that size/cost advantage of m4/3 has been long gone. So you cannot just put a blanket statement that m43 is cheaper and smaller.

I bought the OM-1 for my wife. She would like to do some birding but hates the big Sony lenses that I cart around. The 100-400 is about her limit, but that FOV on FF is a bit short for birds, even with a 1.4x TC. Enter the OM-1 which supposedly has good AF tracking. That combined with a 100-400 gives her a 200-800 FOV - just right for birding. At least in this use case m43 is smaller. But even for travel, the 12-40/2.8 is going to be smaller that many similar FF lenses on a Sony body. I agree that FF has gotten smaller.

Full frame has always been small and affordable, even before Micro Four Thirds existed. Like the first camera I ever considered as a teenager, the Voigtlander Bessa R2A/R3A, same size and weight and price as the 1/1.8" sensor digital camera I eventually chose, Olympus C-5060WZ. But compact and cheap for full frame might come with some bigger sacrifices. I could probably even find a medium format camera that is smaller and cheaper than my E-M1 II + 12-100mm F4, like Holga 120N at 1/3 the weight and 1/50 the price.

Size matters! I am moving from Sony FF where my hiking backpack was Sony 200-600 (or 100-400 with 1.4 TC) Sigma 14-24, Sigma 24-70, and Sony A7R4 body. Replace that with Om1, 300 F4, 12-40. 40-150. Not quite the same, but close and easily 1/2 the size and weight. For my style of photography, FF 60 meg raw files were overkill 90% of the time.
All I need now is for the blasted OM1 to ship!

A Camry is much cheaper than a Porsche, even if the Camry is larger, rooms 5 people in relative comfort and has 4 doors. Porsche buyers can't be very smart....

Jokes aside, most camera sales are driven by marketing. Camera companies make more money from expensive cameras than from cheap ones, at least per unit, so they will market those with the more expensive features, like a full frame sensor. People with less knowledge will mostly buy what they are told to, since they aren't really qualified to figure out what they need. So they buy a Sony A7. Compact camera with a "big engine". Must be good, just like with cars.

lenses:

1. unique zoom range: Oly 8-25/4; 40-150/2.8
2. versatile zoom or long reach: Oly 12-100/4 (versatile); 100-400 (reach)
3. tiny 1.8 lenses: Oly 45/1.8 ...
4. sigma 1.4 trio, especially the 56/1.4

[Panasonic has some nice lenses that I would love to try: 10-25; 25-50, just to name 2]

... and what others have said (weight, compactness, IBIS, etc.)

Price isn’t drastically different, but your all in one options, longer focal lengths, slower equivalent options on FF don’t exist. If you’re pushing boundaries, that’s where m43 has advantages, just hoping that most my Panasonic lenses play well on OM, Especially lenses with OIS…. Will keep some FF big glass like the 35-150, an absolute stunner, but those moments tend to be one offs, half dozen events a year. If the OM-1 is as good as I’m hoping, then I’m going to sell off a lot of FF gear, like half of what I have, as it’s overkill.

M43 has been around for a long time so you can get older m43 bodies very cheaply. I bought an old pany g3 + oly 45/1.8 lens combo for $250, that produces decent photos. It will be a while until a FF body + 85mm lens can go down to the $500 level.

I have the 35-150 that I have probably used couple of times at most and keep thinking about selling it but hanging on to it as there is nothing like it out there. Though in all reality, I barely use all the equipment and for the photography I do (mostly family and travel), I should be okay with APS-C or even m43, but in search of "best of the best", have made the journey from 16mpx GH1 years ago to 50mpx A1 today

Like you, I am also hoping that OM-1 turns out to be as good as it's been marketed and I will also further trim down my FF collection.

Yeah, my OM-1 is arriving tomorrow. I really want a small and light camera. I've been thinking about Sony because of the small/light lens selection. I just don't like the LCD screen on the a7 IV. Thinking about the a7r III.

I love my Panasonic S5. Picture quality is amazing, but it doesn't have many lenses I want... yet! I want a small wide prime. Currently use the Sigma 24mm F3.5.

Want to trade your OM-1 (plus cash) for my A1 ?

"Thinking about the a7r III" . Hey memzinla, guess you sold the A7RIII you bought from me last year, if so, I would suggest the A7RIV instead. It has better AF, more AF points, better eye detect AF and real time tracking. The body controls were updated and some buttons/the joystick are more pronounced now, and the grip is a bit deeper. Really good EVF too, just love mine that I got used here at FM.

"I want a small wide prime". Sigma makes a 24 f2 I series for Sony and now a 20mm f2 also. But for the best 20mm, look at the Sony G f1.8, it is a super lens!

Yes, at the time I really couldn't afford 2 cameras. I guess I still can't. If I buy Sony, I would have to sell my Panasonic S5. I don't have the Olympus either. lol. I just bought the Sigma 20mm F2 for the Panasonic S5. Can't wait to try it!

The most fun camera I own, the one that sees the most use, is the Olympus Pen-F. I like the built- in mono pre-sets. The ergonomics, once you add a base plate, are nice, the unobtrusiveness.

FX (full frame) is sometimes just too large and heavy.
DX (APS-C) lacks enough smallish lenses to make the size/bulk savings worthwhile over FX.
m43 is at times just goldilocks right considering IQ, bulk, weight, and flexibility.
1" sensor compacts - or when I really want pocket size.

So what makes m43 fun? Goldilocks right (I use an E-M5ii and none of the larger PRO lenses; my f2.8's are the old Pannys (12-35, 35-100, 8-18) and primes are the older Olys mostly f1.8's).

While I think the flagships bodies are awesome along with the PRO lenses; they take the bulk and weight away from what I consider just right when FX won't do. Of course, all this is for my purposes and preferences only.

after spending the costs/energy/logistics involved in 'going out to get photographs', coming home with a good number of keepers is a whole lot more fun than coming home with no keepers.

m4/3 generally being smaller/lighter, less expensive, and with equally, or better (in my opinion and experience), IQ than many of it's competitors makes it all the better and therefor adds to the fun.

Good points, Paul. I’d like to add that many times even if you fail to find your primary photographic target, you might be presented with other opportunities. A lighter, smaller kit makes it possible to carry an extra lens or two that would allow you to execute new compositions. I had this experience in Manitoba recently. On days with no polar bear sightings, I wandered the tundra and saw many beautiful scenes. But since I had maxxed out my carry on weight with my telephotos, I didn’t have a normal or wide lens to take advantage of the landscape, and ended up having to use my cell phone:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1145380/29#15897865

I would have been much happier with a real camera and choice of a 12-40 or 12-100.

I haven't used another system in about 10 years, so I can't compare it to others.
However, I doubt my next purchase will be m43.

I like some features, like focus stacking. And I used Live Time last weekend for a waterfall. But I don't know if those are exclusive to m43.

There are m43 features that are overrated and unnecessary, like weather-resistance. The manufacturers have convinced people they are suddenly must-haves so they can make more money.

Disagree about your comment about weather resistant being overrated. I’ve shot with my Olympus gear all over the world and in pretty harsh environments were weather proofing/sealing is important.

For example, in Indonesia on the island of Lombok a rouge wave hit some rocks next to me and dumped at least 10 gallons, if not more, of salt water mixed with sand all over me and my E-M1 Mk2 and 12-100mm Pro lens. My camera and lens was completely covered with sand and salt water, and all I had to do was take my water bottle and rinse it off and dry it with my shirt that was in my bag and that was it—no issues whatsoever. I cannot say that would be the same if the camera body and lens wasn’t sealed.
