Personally, I'm not going to shun Canon for dusting off old designs and refreshing them with new optical adaptations, but I am going to shun them for not moving forward. IMO, they need to do more to entice people to re-buy in to these multi-thousand dollar behemoths and they are not doing that. They know what people want, but they are holding back for some reason.
Nikon is poised to really differentiate the super telephoto market if they plan to release more TC integrated primes, as well as make greater use of PF elements. Both have been clamored for years on the Canon side, after Canon made the ideas famous, but those cries seemed to have fallen flat. I can only imagine Canon couldn't get the performance to a level they targeted, but why introduce these expensive stop gaps with very little to gain in the interim? Adoption of the EF III Super Tele's and the RF Super Tele's have to be the weakest I've seen in a long time. Canon's version II's were almost immediately snapped up, Nikon's E/last Gen tele's saw a pretty good adoption, and Sony's E mount super tele's saw a crazy adoption... but Canon's latest gen has been very slow to find adoption.
Moving in the current direction, I don't see that changing very much when the rest of the line materializes. But on the bright side, it means I won't be parting with my money anytime soon.
