Truly hilarious if these are actually announced tomorrow. Canon doesn't even have basic primes that people have been asking for yet, but they're going to launch additional $14,000 and $15,000 behemoths for the 4-5 people in the world that need them.

Exactly my thoughts. There are dozens of EF lenses without RF equivalents and a 800/5.6 & 1,200/8.0 are the last ones I'd ever think of.

I am not updated with Nikkor lenses which led me to this NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S that uses PF (Phase Fresnel) lens tech.

What I could not find is the physical dimensions & weight of it. Front element would be 2mm larger than the 500/4.0's 125mm.

If I were to hazard a guess this Nikkor would be nearly 2kg or 4.4lbs in weight and nearly as tall as 400mm or 500mm lens.

Would the price point be north of $13,000? Odds are, yes.

Owners of the 800/5.6 VR for the F mount are fortunate. Their lens is not rendered obsolete but may even appreciate in value in the same way as the 200/1.8 or 50/1.0 enjoys their current value today.

I have the original 800 5.6. I really doubt I'd purchase the RF version but never say never.

These lenses are fascinating...I might get a 1200 if I lived next to a mudflat all year round. haha. But it seems very specialized otherwise. However I do like all these new and unusual long lenses that have been coming out recently.

Personally, I'm not going to shun Canon for dusting off old designs and refreshing them with new optical adaptations, but I am going to shun them for not moving forward. IMO, they need to do more to entice people to re-buy in to these multi-thousand dollar behemoths and they are not doing that. They know what people want, but they are holding back for some reason.

Nikon is poised to really differentiate the super telephoto market if they plan to release more TC integrated primes, as well as make greater use of PF elements. Both have been clamored for years on the Canon side, after Canon made the ideas famous, but those cries seemed to have fallen flat. I can only imagine Canon couldn't get the performance to a level they targeted, but why introduce these expensive stop gaps with very little to gain in the interim? Adoption of the EF III Super Tele's and the RF Super Tele's have to be the weakest I've seen in a long time. Canon's version II's were almost immediately snapped up, Nikon's E/last Gen tele's saw a pretty good adoption, and Sony's E mount super tele's saw a crazy adoption... but Canon's latest gen has been very slow to find adoption.

Moving in the current direction, I don't see that changing very much when the rest of the line materializes. But on the bright side, it means I won't be parting with my money anytime soon.

Must be fun shooting using such a lengthy lens with a R3. It would not be replaced for at least 15 years or longer.

The 800mm 5.6 is very popular with sports photographers for venues like the Olympics where you can't get close (and sometimes the NFL). There was a photo from 2008 with a whole row of them covering swimming. I have a lot of friends that use them for this purpose.

I watched a very recent video by a bird photographer on YT (Who's channel I really enjoy) regarding the EF 800 5.6. The reviewer complained about the weight, minimum focusing distance and focus speed. He also went on to say at times 800 feels a little bit long.

In order -

Yes. The current 800mm 5.6 is a beast of a thing. Would a lighter version be nice? I suppose, but I have hand held this lens a time or two and I don't think a lighter version would benefit me much if at all. It's not the weight, its just a B I G lens to swing around period.

His minimum focusing distance complaint doesn't make great deal of sense to me. This is a purpose built lens. If minimum focusing distance is a thing, I don't know, switch your lens?

I've never found focusing speed to be bad. Sure, when the light is getting crummy it doesn't perform like my 28-70 2.0 but few things do.

I'm not sure I even understood his '800 feels a bit long' comment. Since I primarily shoot birds, I can count on one hand the times I've said 'Move back bird!.'

Full specs and price are not released yet for the 800PF. Rumors say it might happen this week. Optimists on Nikon forum think it is under $10K. I expect $10K minimum.

Relative length to the newly released 400 f/2.8 with built in TC can be seen on this updated roadmap image. the 400 official measurement is 38cm. So the 800PF will be a little longer than that but not by much.

If the 800 follows on the leaked specs of the 1200 and ends up being an adaptation to the RF 400 than one thing that will be greatly improved is the MFD. The 1200 keeps the 600's MFD...so if the 800 keeps the 400s MFD than that will be a 2.5m MFD down from the 800L's 6m MFD. Of course the 1200 will be down from the 1200/5.6's MFD of 14m to 4.5m (but of course that isn't as comparable).

Also the length will be shorter than the 800L and the weight will be ~RF 400 weight of 2.9kg versus 800L at 4.49kg. Big advancements if IQ holds up.

I agree on all counts. The question being if you own the previous iteration is it worth the upgrade? At this point , for me, the feeling is no. (Subject to change as a moments notice because that's how I roll)

I hope your optimistic outlook on price will come to fruition.

Based on your description of the Z mount 800/6.3 VR it would essentially have the physical dimension of a 500/4.0 IS Version 1 which is 5.8 x 15.2" (146 x 387mm) but hopefully a weight near 4.4lbs (2kg).

Wow! I did not know Nikon came out with a NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S with a built-in extender! What a dream lens to have if you're into sports! Flick of a switch and you get a 560mm f/4 with 5.5 stop of IS!

If I was shooting sports professionally I'd ask my boss to buy this for me!

I do wonder if it was possible to have a built-in TC that has an option for 1.4x or 2.0x?

It reduce lens SKUs from 3 to 1 and would surely help in increasing the production volume of Canon/Nikon/Sony's 400/2.8 by a factor of 3 if they did this. Many would be so inclined to buy one even when it approaches $20,000. Margins would also improve further making.

With a flick of a switch this theoretical super tele prime priced nearing $20,000 would become

- 400/2.8 without TC
- 560/4.0 with 1.4x TC
- 800/5.6 with 2.0x TC

I wouldn't mind it weighing about 6.6lbs (3kg).

I think the 1200 is more for rental houses and big photo agencies to have just in case. At that kind of distance so many factors come into play to mess with IQ, but sometimes you just need the maximum you can get. Doesnít make sense for any regular Joe to own.

Canon announces $17K 800mm F5.6, $20K 1200mm F8 lenses for RF mount

3140g (6.92lb) vs 4.5kg (9.9lbs) of the EF 800mm

3340g (7.36lb) vs 4.5kg (9.9lbs) of the EF 800mm

My guess was right! It's $17,000 or more! lol

I'd love to to buy the 1200mm f/8 but I prefer not to provide free photos to photo thieves

If they want to "save" the environment then they're more than welcome to spend the $20k for the lens

Back in 2008 when I got my EF 800mm I started getting an avalanche of solicitations to donate photos to fund other's project to "save" the environment. Whether I say yes or no they just liberate it and apologize after the fact.

I know it's off topic and off putting but sharing a bit of a preview on what to expect.
