These seem an odd choice to me but the lens designs are unique if you compare to 400/600. At first I thought maybe PS but they were rumored. That 1200 ainít fitting in many/any bags.

Thanks - 1200 makes no sense to me, but what do I know . I don't fully understand the 800 either, 600 + 1.4x / 2x gets you the focal length. At that kind of distance / range, the ergonomics of these lenses have to be brutal. I guess the IQ / AF would be better than using the extenders?

As someone with a EF 400/2.8 IS II & EF 800/5.6 IS I'd have wanted to see a RF 400/2.8 IS with built-in 2.0x extender & RF 600/4 IS with built-in 2.0x extender.

This would have helped in economies of scale for ultra specialized lenses.

Expect either lenses to cost north of $13,000 or even $17,000.

The RF 800/5.6 & RF 1200/8.0 will hopefully weigh less than 3kg/6.6lbs. That is a key selling point for an upgrade for those still shooting.

I still cannot wrap my head around the timing of the release though. With so many higher volume EF lenses not yet having an RF equivalent I would think Canon would prioritize that first before these ultra niche optics.

Yeah, I'd imagine they would be better than the 600+extenders, plus you could put the 1.4x on the 1200mm and get a 1680mm f/11, which I would imagine would be much better than the 600 with stacked extenders. We already know these cameras can AF quite well at f/11, though you may be limited to the center of frame.

Indeed, sounds like specialized use cases for very rare and difficult to get to wildlife. I guess if you want long, you want long

When your resources are limited, I think it makes perfect sense to spend what you have on high return products. I wonder how long it takes to grow/fab the front element on the 1200 these days. Like Jman13 pointed out, a crystal clear and sharp (weather permitting) 1680mm f/11 would open up many photo ops . Probably Canon's response to the Webb telescope.

These are just such uber specialized lenses. There has obviously been a market for 800/5.6 with both Canon and Nikon selling one. I've never been tempted by one as I prefer the versatility of a 600/4 with 1.4TC to get to 800/5.6. 1200/8 is something I use only on rare occasion these days with my 600 but that is somewhat because I don't love the IQ I get with 600/2x (and that spans from my original 600II, the 600III I used for a few days and my Sony 600GM).

For sure though these native focal lengths will outperform TCs on 600/4 lens but is that worth the loss of versatility? Certainly not for me. If I wanted 1200/8 and 800/5.6 a lot then I'd probably opt for the 800 and use 1.4TC to get to 1120/8 instead.

I really thought Canon would get lenses like 300/2.8 and 500/4 to market before these two lenses. I actually believed we wouldn't see another 800/5.6 in RF but I guess I was wrong in that one.

I would prefer Nikon's direction of built-in TC over these lenses. High likelihood their upcoming 600S will have a built-in TC like the 400S does and that to me is the way to get a much more versatile lens for the super high cost all of these lenses are going to be.

Is it just me or do these look like the 400 f/2.8 and 600 f/4 with built-in 2x converters and EF adapters?

$15K and up I guess?? Nikon sells its 800/5.6 with matching 1.25x TC for $16.3K. The circa 2008 EF 800L lists for $13K (I think at release it was $12K).

Yes...I think they more look like a 600/4 with a 1.4 or a 2.0...more so than a 400 with 2.0 if you compare the designs. The 1200 for sure looks like a 600/4 with just extra length of ~ a 2xTC on the end.

And I guess the silver end (which is essentially an EF-RF adapter spacer) is here to stay as a signature design cue for the RF superteles.

Yeah itís hard to tell from that small pic, just seemed like the front portion of the lens on the 800 is shorter than it is on the 1200 (similar to how it is with the 400 and 600). Plus the ďextensionĒ on the back of the lenses seems to be pretty much the same length in both cases. I guess if that is what they did it makes sense from a marketing standpoint, itís two lenses that they can add to the lineup with minimal R&D invested. Just really hope we get to see some unique RF superteleís soon, they have so many insane patents like that internal TC thatís switchable between 1.4x and 2x, the 600 DO, etc. and I donít know why they keep dragging their feet bringing something like that to the market.

Yes, looking again you are correct with the front of the 800 lens more like the 400/2.8 and then the rear just having that extra tube length like a 2xTC would be.

I also agree that Canon should really work on bringing out some of their more unique patents whether that is built-in TCs or faster DO lenses or some of those exotic zoom patents seen recently. They could really drive business back to Canon if they come out with some lenses like those.

This is exactly what it looks like to me as well. The proportions are nearly perfect and such lenses would make sense considering todays market. I would have hoped those built in TC's would have been the 1.4x - 2x design Canon has a patent for. I don't see any switch at all to engage the TC so maybe this image has been PS'd enough to hide a little surprise?

At this point it's starting to look like they are killing the 500 lens. It never received the mark III facelift nor the RF mount.

having had 2 800mm and read about the 1200 they had, I think they would be better off spending time on a 500 and a 300 or a big zoom 150-600 f5.6

It makes sense. F/8 isn't really so hard for AF anymore. And the 1200/5.6 is huge. 500/4 can be adapted.

I doubt they just put a 2x in the optical design. But a 600/4 basically is a 1200/8, other than a 1200 probably needing to be longer due to longer FL.

A 1200/6.3 with DO Technology would be nice also . But expensive as L .

I prefer the 600f/4 with 1.4x if needed. For those of us who have to get on an airplane to take pics at times, you have hard limits on what you can bring onto the airplane. One big lens and another pack with camera stuff is about all you can bring anywhere these days. But if I shot out of a car all the time (for example if you live near Yellowstone), I can see having an 800mm dedicated fast lens.

The 1200mm L 5.6 sold for $90,000 in 1993. A 6.3 version of the lenses would be prohibitably expensive today. Also... that was a 36 lb lens, I don't think any level of DO massaging can get that down to a reasonable weight. Oh, BTW, the front element on a 1200 6.3 would be very close to 200mm (190mm minimum), DO or not, that thing would be big and heavy.

As far as whether the 1200L f/8.0 is a DO lens, here are the stats from the '93 1200 f/5.6 (personally, I believe it may be as it doesn't look 30+ inches long in the released shot):

Technical data from Wiki

Focal length 1200mm
Aperture (max/min) f/5.6 - f/32
Close focus distance 45.9'/14m
Max. magnification 1:11.1
Diaphragm blades 9

Max. length 32.9"/83.6cm
Diameter 8.9"/22.8cm
Weight 36.37lbs/16.5kg
