I found an old Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4x teleconverter in one of my drawers and noticed that it mounts directly to the Canon converters (unlike the vIII 2x and 1.4x). I mounted a 300II + 2.0xIII + Kenko 1.4x + adapter + R5 and took a few test shots. After taking a few shots the camera eventually gives you a communication error and shuts down. I remember back in the day there was talk about taping pins? Is there a way to tape the pins somehow to allow these TC's to be stacked and still have AF?

I was very very surprised to see how sharp this combo is, so if I can get it working I'll definitely use it in certain situations. For the few shots you can take before it freezes, AF works...

Hello Art,

Stacking the extenders depends a lot on the model of the extender.

IIRC, EF II can stack naturally. EF III require a 12mm extension tube. and RF extenders require a 24mm extension tube.

Here's a good link to the EF III method:

https://glennwoodell.zenfolio.com/blog/2021/3/stacking-canon-series-iii-extenders?fbclid=IwAR3PY0kLY_wOebrFT1FqHuJa_f4KoQplpKD78QF-mz2vDgBjbQE2Le8PLl8

if I knew how to add images here, I'd post some of my experiences with RF extender stacking

Nice, does the 12mm or 24mm extension tubes affect anything? I haven't read the article yet but will read it now. You still have AF?

It would be really cool if I could get this Kenko TC working somehow without having to add the 12mm tube.

It's a peach. I keep my (Teleplus) Pro 300 DG 1.4x in my bag, along with batteries and cards, etc. Just case. I found that it was very much on-par with the EF Extender 1.4x, and not quite as good at the edges as the EF 1.4x III. Plus, as you say, no snoot sticking out. Very handy. (Doesn't freeze on my stuff; M6 is my most recent).

Hmmmm, so yours works without causing a camera error? If yes maybe I need to try it again and see if it had a loose connection....that would be really nice if this thing works as it's tiny and like you cent the center was plenty sharp for my needs.

What order do you install them? I used the order as I typed above.

It is very easy if on Flickr, just copy the BBCode and paste it and your picture will show up. You can choose the size with the BBCode also.

I install it between EF Extender and the camera. It's worked fine with a variety of DSLR (1D-series, 5D-series, 6D) and the M5/M6 lineup. I holding out for my first R-series camera.

Here's some old threads on the topic.

I tried it again on the R5 and it unfortunately messes with the IS on the 300II. It makes the IS snap and "clunk". I believe I could use it with IS turned off though, I will have to try. I can take several photos with the combo but didn't feel comfortable with the IS making the clunking noise and jarring the image in the EVF. I cannot believe how sharp this combo is with this cheap little Kenko extender though, it doesn't appear to have any extender installed let alone a 2x and cheap 1.4x.

What was the old trick to tape the pins? I would love to figure this one out as I would have a very nice 840mm f/8?? It didn't recognize the Kenko so I'm not sure what the final aperture would be wide open with both extenders.

On the R3 I have stacked 1.4x and 2x III’s with the 12mm extension tube on a 500mm f4 version 1. It works without any errors. Eye detect and subject detection work and seem to track fine. I had IS mode 1 on and did not notice anything odd. As far as the camera and exif go it picked up the 2x that was nearest to the lens only and shows 1000mm f8. Need to try this combo out more to see if the stacked 1400mm f11 is any better or worse than the 1600 f22 of the RF 800mm f11 with 2x extender.

Good to know. I'm sure the error has something to do with the Kenko but it's unfortunate because it's super sharp. I'll buy the 12mm extension tube and give that a try with my Canon 1.4xIII

Bummer.

I use a DIY mylar anulus (i.e. ring of plastic paper) to isolate all of the contacts, link below. This makes it a totally manual lens. Normally, this also means that it's going to stay wide open (which is where my 500/4L IS is usually set), but there is an awkward kludge: for EOS EF lenses, if you remove the lens while depressing the DOF Preview button (if you have one), the lens aperture stays at the stopped-down setting, while it's off the camera. It will retain the stopped-down aperture until it sees a "howdy" from EOS EF (i.e. when you put it on a camera with unshielded pins).

Cool. It must be focused on something within about seven or eight meters, for which it will have super magnification (for a super-tele, not for a macro).

A single 12mm tube shortens the 'infinity' focus distance on my EF 500/4L IS to 13m, and a second one to about 10m, The minimum focus distance, MFD, changes much less, from 4.2m to 3.6m with one tube, and to 3.5m with a single 25mm tube (or 2x 12mm tubes). My tests were to determine infinity focus and MFD values when using extenders for shooting closer than the normal MFD, not for stacking extenders, which would result in different placement, but probably about the same effect (accounting for more TCs).

using the extension tube generally removes infinity focus, but that really isn't useful unless you're shooting the moon or stars

I'll be interested in your feedback.

I haven't stacked any extenders on EF lenses (because I only have RF extenders currently) but I did use the R5 + RF 800 F11 + RF 1.4x + RF 2x.

2240mm @ F32.

and it was surprisingly usable. granted, image quality was a lot better with the RF 600 F4 + RF 2x and cropping, but that's to be expected for an extra $13,000

I also used the R5 + RF 100-500 f4.5 - 7.1 + RF 1.4x + RF 2x

840mm f/16 - 1400mm f/20 zoom lens was pretty fun

What order do you install them? I used the order as I typed above.

The older 300 Kenko Pro (I have one) works fine but doesn't report the aperture correctly. Kenko then "upgraded" the 300 DG to report more information, and then it stopped working properly. The newer ones are more common. I used to use it with the 300/2.8 and 400 DO II, which I have now sold, on the 5DIV with liveview. I did had test with the EF-RF adapter on the R5 and it focussed fine. ePhotozine reviewed it some 10 years ago and found it was very good optically, even better than their 1.4xTC. Maybe I'll pick up a cheap f/4 EF telephoto and use it with that as an f/12.

If you want to retain the infinity focus, the best way is likely to stack RF and EF III extender. All that is needed is somewhat modified RF to EF adapter. The best one for the modification seems to be Commlite control ring adapter. The control ring is essential - the inner parts of standard one are different.

Can you tell us more why the Commlite control ring is better or how to modify it?

That particular model requires the minimum amount of material removal from the inside. If you look at images, you should be able to see the difference.

In practice you only need to dremel (or file) from the side with the pins. I did a little smoothing from the other three sides as well, but that might not have been necessary. The best part in this model is that if you are careful, you don't need to expose the internals at all. With the Commlite basic adapter (and based on pictures I presume with others as well) the ribbon cables were exposed and one had to be careful when attaching the TC.

After the modification I wouldn't use the adapter without the TC. It might have been possible to roughen the surface and thus reduce reflection, but that would also increase wear on the TC, so I left the new surface smooth. With the TC that won't matter.

I stacked a Sigma 2X and Canon 2X v2 long ago. Go that idea from Liquidstone for moon shots.
