p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New Godox globe diffuser option for any off-camera flash (ML-CD15) | |
Micael Widell describes his favorite outdoor macro lighting setup in this video here:
https://youtu.be/oNJvuP3m9ug
He attaches a random light globe he found online (but that magically fits!) to a Godox speedlight he holds in his left hand when he shoots.
I stumbled onto a new modifier from Godox that appears to be custom-made for this purpose, but also offers a bit more flexibility than Widell’s solution. I’m posting about it here because the info for the item — at least on the B&H and Adorama websites — really doesn’t explain anything about this use case or what it can attach to.
Here’s a link to the Godox info page, which is far more helpful than the sale-site pages:
http://www.godox.com/EN/Products_Accessories_ML-CD15_ML-CS1625.html
As noted there, the ML-CD15 is a flexible, silicone globe that can be partially collapsed. It comes with three separate adapters, so it can be attached to A) *any* speedlight; B) any Godox round-head flash like the V1, AD100pro, or AD200pro-with-the-round-head-adapter; or C) any Godox-mount strobe like the AD300pro or AD400pro.
But there’s more flexibility that even that Godox info page doesn’t mention: The round-head adapter includes a magnetized ring at its top. Which means that if you have the Godox AK-R1 magnetic attachment kit, you can use any of its attachments *underneath* the globe. This can definitely be a bit awkward because you have to remove the globe from the adapter any or every time you want to change a magnetic attachment. Even so, this ability is useful for attaching gels or (what I’ve been doing) inserting both the disk and dome diffusers from the AK-R1 kit (sold separately as the AK-R13 and AK-R11 respectively) directly to the V1 or AD100pro under the globe — so you get *two additional layers* of diffusion. I’ve been doing this just for some interior photography and it diffuses the light quite nicely.
If you don’t like the globe shape (Widell notes a few of its downsides in his video), Godox also sells a similar ML-CS1625 “soft tent” diffuser that is mostly silicone but has some sort of flat plastic diffuser panel at the front. I haven’t tried it, but it appears to work pretty much the same as the ML-CD15 and comes with the same adapters.
Both attachments are being marketed primarily for use with Godox’s ML30 and ML60 continuous lights, so you might be able to learn more about them from videos or reviews of those products.
Anyway, I hope this info is helpful to somebody. I’d like to cross-post this to the Lighting forum but I’m not sure how to do that. Do I just post it separately or is there a way to have one post appear in two places?
