I have a couple of these I have been using with 24 by 24 reflective soft boxes.

I have a chance to buy a variety of bigger ones as big as 48 by 48.

Any opinions on this, please?

Thanks.

This flash has pro-level output, so call it 70Ws. In a large SB with double diffusion, and trying to cover a group or entire room, this rating will require full-energy discharges at ISO 100. You can help the flash by using a higher ISO or shooting at wider aperture, but will then capture more ambient light which could be objectionable. Full discharges slow the shooting rate, and may overheat the unit. More than the SB size itself, the distance to subject is the determinant for effective flash energy. You should be fine with a medium SB (3'x4') for single subjects. My strobes are at least 600Ws but I also use flashes in the studio.

Thanks for a thoughtful and constructive response.

You talk about catching ambient light by changing the settings on the camera. Would I catch more ambient light by increasing the ISO. or just by opening up the lens?

Thanks.

You will catch more ambient by either increasing ISO or using a wider aperture, in equal measure. Meaning if you double the ISO you get one more stop ambient, or open the aperture one stop, same thing.

You can offset it by using a higher shutter speed IF your camera can sync at it. The shutter speed will not affect the flash exposure.

Normally, you try to control the ambient light with shutter speed and the flash on your subject with aperture. ISO affect the overall exposure. If you open the aperture more, you also decrease your depth of field, which may or may not be something you want to do.

I would bypass the soft box and shoot it through a scrim or diffusion.
