p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Walk in the park with a Red-tail

My wife, the 2 kids, and my new grandson were out for a walk in Brookside Park near Pasadena when I spotted this hawk swoop down from a branch. As we were walking I saw him go tree to tree but didn't pay all that much attention because locally, I can't get within 100 yards of any of our hawks anyway. We were sitting at a table ordering lunch when I saw him land in a tree about 100 feet away. So I figured, what the heck, I'll give it a shot, fully expecting him to fly away. I took a few safety shots as I approached and was astonished that he let me get within about 30 feet and I stopped there. All I had with me was a D5200 and a 70-300 AF-P which I like to carry along when I don't expect to see anything and want to travel light. Lesson learned

Ha, the hawk was checking you out for potential prey . Great capture, Gary!

Thanks Joshua. All I can say is your hawks are much friendlier than anything around me And an update for my "lightweight walk around setup" is long overdue.

Lovely Garry. Did you happen to run into the little old lady?

It took me a little while to make the connection but I got it. That's going way back

Nice Gary, these birds are extremely smart. The other day I was over at the park with my young grandson trying to show him a screech owl that I see from time to time. I said to myself I can guarantee the owl sighting if I leave the camera at home. Bingo it was sitting out nice and pretty and the 1.5 year old grandson gets to go whoo whoo, and I miss a great shot. That hawk probably saw you had your backup rig and thought he would tease you.
