I do agree, however their costs are already baked into the initial cost (not to mention all of the other services that they offer and maintain, offsetting that cost), the upload isn't really free. There is obviously something that differentiates all storage services, however I don't know what those technical aspects would be beyond the service they use, price, transfer speed and total storage. I'm pretty sure iDrive doesn't use any of those services for their offerings, which would be a major reason why they would have lower bandwidth (or whatever limiting there is on their end). Pretty hard to be a smaller company competing with the infrastructure of those services. But the price can't be beat for cloud backup storage.

There are cheaper options. I've been using Arq, which uses AWS for backup. Using Amazon's lower-cost storage option (which is perfect for backup), the cost is $1 per terabyte per month. It's really fast too: the upload speed is very close to the upload speed of my connection. It's a little more complicated to setup but only slightly. For me, the fast backup speed and the comfort I've got in Amazon outweighs the setup effort. But I totally get that's not going to be true for everyone. I actually use Backblaze as a secondary backup and it's been great too.
