How are the upload speeds to Backblaze? Do they throttle when you’re trying to backup multiple TB’s?

I called my internet provider because I thought they were throttling me but they said they don't do that. With the current upload speed it's going to be another 40 days or so until the initial backup is complete. I still have a few more TB to add after that but this 14TB backup is the majority of my still images. Now that I started playing with video, things are going to compound quickly.

I had a scare with someone trying to break in my house so I decided I should do a cloud backup in case of home robbery or fire. I keep backup copies at home and office but there's gaps between backups and who knows what could happen in case of robbery or fire. I saw the half off deal on Backblaze during the holidays and thought it was a no brainer for another layer security. I have about 4TB already uploaded with 10TB to go.

Approx. how many GB or TB are you able to upload per day?

Well, after looking at that it looks like it might be a lot longer than 40days because my upload speed is between 10mbps-15mpbs. Oh well, it runs in the background and I can still work on my computer while it's uploading.

And now you'll also be all set for the massive files coming off the Canon 80+mp beast they'll likely be releasing next year.

I'm sorry that you experienced the theft scare. For perspective, water damage is generally more likely than fire or theft. For things that aren't easily backed up offsite (say, family photos in my case) I've learned to not leave things in boxes on the floor or carpet, especially under a bed. Water gets drawn right into a box unless it's like a plastic tub. A top for the plastic tub is also safe bet, if you have have a floor above you or sprinklers at work or home.

Very good point you make. There's also the method of storing backup hard drives in a gun safe but you gotta wonder if a hard drive would survive in a safe in a house fire no matter what it's fire rating. Can you imagine if your house burned down and all that was left was your safe (discolored/smoldering/soaked) and your only copy of your lifetime collection of photos was inside on a hard drive? I don't want to chance it, even with an offsite copies because there's always going to be gaps between backups. I've always been against putting my stuff in the cloud but I finally caved.

I just upgraded my internet service today so I can get this massive upload completed a little sooner but the new calculation is now between 40-50 days to complete at approximately 25mbps upload speed.

It's still not widely available but if you can get a fiber Internet connection, it's a game-changer. The download speed is great - usually 1000 Mbps - but the fact that it's also usually 1000 Mbps upload is what makes the difference. That's over 100 megabytes per second of upload speed and I regularly get that in real world performance. Lightroom CC is backing up all my photos and I use two online backups for the Lightroom CC local library, plus all my other files, which are mostly video: Arq with Amazon Web Services and Backblaze.

Backblaze is great because it's simple and cheap. Arq is great because it can use many different cloud storage services. I use AWS S3 Glacier Deep Archive. It's less than $1 per terabyte per month. I do a test restore every few months but otherwise don't have to think about backups at all.

I no longer do local backups. Lightroom CC is using Amazon's Oregon data centers, Arq is using the ones in Ohio, and Backblaze is split between Phoenix and Sacramento. If some event has caused my data to be lost from all of those locations then I'm probably no longer alive to be concerned about my data!

Comcast/Xfinity is my internet provider and it only provides uploads speeds of 35MB per second, even with the 1gigibit download speed service. The Comcast/Xfinity upload speeds are so abysmal, I decided to stop using on-line storage services. I've been told that Verizon's 1Gigibit internet service provides 1 gigibit speeds for both uploads and downloads.

I'm currently uploading to BackBlaze as well, switching from Crashplan, which I've had for years and years. CrashPlan has been great, but since they only have a commercial tier, I'm now paying a fair bit more than I will with Backblaze, and their upload / scanning process can get a little wonky at times.

I have a 50Mbps upload speed (500 down), and Backblaze seems to use all of it when I'm not using my machine (I also am allowing 8 threads for it, so it can have more resources for the encryption process, as everything is encrypted before being uploaded, so none of your data is stored visible. (I also use a private key so Backblaze can't even unencrypt it....but I can't lose that password.)

Right now, it's estimating about 30 days for initial backup, which is 12.7 TB. In the first day, it backed up around 560GB, so it may end up being less (at that rate, it'd be around 23 days).

While it's great to have 1gig up/down you're still at the mercy of the weakest link. If the server you are uploading to only allocates 2mb of bandwidth to you, you're only going to upload at 2mb.

That would be rare. No major service running in the cloud is going to limit bandwidth like that, largely because it doesn't make any economic sense: public cloud providers like Amazon and Google don't charge more for faster upload.

Almost always, the bottleneck to these services is going to be your Internet service provider. Asymmetrical services like cable are going to be terrible but fortunately, fiber is getting more and more common. My ISP now supports 5 Gbps and 10 Gbps is coming too.

I disagree, you are paying fees based on storage and bandwidth. For instance I use iDrive which has some exceptionally slow upload rates. I have a 1gigabit connection with a cap of 40mb/s for the upload. IDrive offers 5tb of storage for the same price as the big guys offering 1 or 2tb. This cap is well documented but can be bypassed for uploads by having them send you a hard drive which they will upload to the server.

I don't know what underlying cloud service iDrive uses but, for any service using AWS or Azure or Google, "you are paying fees based on storage and bandwidth" wouldn't be entirely accurate. The service (and therefore you) would be paying for:

a. Storage at rest (i.e., what is backed up)
b. Retrieving storage (i.e., doing a restore)

They would not be paying for the transfer of data into the cloud service. That is, public cloud providers charge for egress from their cloud but they don't charge for ingress.

A backup service that is significantly slower than the upload speed of your Internet connection probably isn't a very well architected backup service.
