p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mechanical Shutter Type Option Disabled for new 24-120 S

I have noticed Mechanical Shutter type option under Custom Setting d5 Shutter Type is grayed out when I use Z 24-120 S in Z 6II? It allows to choose either Auto or EFCS.

Documentation says "Mechanical Shutter is not available with some lenses"

I also came to know that the option is grayed out for 100-400 S as well.

1. Can any one clarify, why is this option grayed out?
2. Does Auto mode uses Mechanical Shutter as default and switches to EFCS when it is needed? If answer is Yes, what is the trigger to switch?
3. What could be the relation between Lens and Shutter type...?

From Thom Hogan @ https://www.zsystemuser.com/nikon-z-system-news-and/electronic-shutter.html

"Here's where the dilemma comes into play: a number of Z-mount lenses don't allow Mechanical (M). If you were previously set to EFCS, all you see is the grayed out E and you might think that you're in some kind of "all electronic" shutter mode (you're not, you're in EFCS). All three DX lenses lock you out of changing Shutter Type to Mechanical. The upcoming 100-400mm lens does it, too. Indeed, many of the lenses with built-in VR do this. I believe the reason for this has to do with the timing interaction of the VR mechanism and the image sensor. But in no case is this "all electronic" as some people are complaining. Again, there is the limitation of 1/2000 shutter speed to worry about, though, if you set EFCS."

See the link above for answers to your questions.

Congrats on your new 24-120 lens! How many of you in the US have received yours? I am located in the southeast and have one on order but it has not arrived to my dealer yet. Thanks.

Quite a few Z lenses do this to my understanding, the 100-400 does as well. Typically, there's not much downside to running EFCS and mech shutter as a combination, so it's really a non issue.

EFCS is only half of full electronic shutter. There is still a mechanical aspect while using only EFCS.

Yet the 1/2000 s limitation only kicks in if you actively choose EFCS. If the camera reverts to AUTO, then I would assume that it would revert to mechanical shutter for shutter speeds not suitable for EFCS, probably 1/2000 s and faster. For these shutter speeds, it would appear likely that any problems resulting from the interaction of the VR and the mechanical shutter are no longer present (either the mechanical shutter does not affect VR anymore, or the effect is insignificant at these shutter speeds, or VR is disabled altogether at these shutter speeds).

I’ll add that I think Hogan’s hypothesis as to why VR lenses don’t do mechanical probably isn’t due to some sort of timing mechanism but rather optical VR can sometimes make shutter shock worse. I’ve seen this happen on a few lenses in other systems. By disabling the mechanical first curtain in all but the fastest shutter speeds it may allow the VR control loop design to be a bit more robust by not having to deal with the fairly high frequency shock of the first curtain. The Panasonic 45-175 was heavily impacted by this kind of effect when it first came out and a firmware update was required to tame it.

As everyone has said there is no really no downside to EFCS on the Z cameras unless shooting a very fast prime and Auto takes care of that issue.
