For those that have been lucky enough to use this lens for some time now, do you feel its worth it over the 24-200, which obviously has more reach but no constant aperture?

The copy of the 24-200 I tested on Z7 was not as good as I need on edges and corners even stopped down so I returned it. The Z 24-120 I've been shooting for three months is excellent and very consistent across the frame and zoom range. Build and handling feels better than what I recall from the 24-200.

Yet a other lens to consider. I'm new to Nikon and the Z 100-400 and Z 24-120 just were not on my radar when I pre-ordered my Z9. Also that came to me a lot sooner than I tough based on what I was told. My pre-order for that was more timely than I thought and I am not a NPS member. Have placed orders for both but they are on back order. In the mean time I have been very fortunate to find four great used Z/S lenses but for me none of those would go away if and when these two missing pieces show up. One lesson I've learned is to not read forum threads that @RoamiongScott is contributing too. It just ends up costing me money. Have enjoyed seeing the images in this thread. For me a lenses like the 24-120 and 100-400 are the two lens combination I like for hiking. The faster f/2.8 trinity I use for events and sports.

Like you say, the 24-120 and 100-400 are probably the ultimate hiking/landscape duo. They won’t replace a 105, fast 35 or 85; or macro (usually…although the latter with 1.4x has for me). Horses for courses. That said, portraits at 120/4 are “good enough” for my uses, so I rarely find myself wanting other glass.

For landscape, a 14-30, 24-120 and 58/1.4 are what's in my lightweight goto bag. The 70-200 with both converters is in the car and the rest of the gear goes in that backpack if I think I'll need it.

As re the 24-120 v 24-200, I personally think the 24-200 is quite remarkable optically, at least my copy is. However for most "walk-around" travel or street shooting I do, I occasionally appreciate the faster and usable f4 of the 24-120. Unfortunately, at the same time I also occasionally miss the 150-200 range of the 24-200. It's a good argument for owning both, but the reality is for me is the wrong one will always be the one I chose to mount that day

I too am very much enjoying this lens. Optimised for the edge to edge sharpness at the wide end and central sharpness at all focal lengths. Nice fall-off at longer focal lengths and very well corrected for aberrations. This really is an excellent all-purpose zoom.

Continue to wait for my copy but since I ordered from B&H have no idea how long it will take to get. That is OK since I’ve already bought six Nikkor lenses since my Z9 showed up. This and the Z100-400 are the ones still on order. Since this will be used for hiking I’ve dencider I need to get a lighter body as well since I’m unlikely to take the Z9 out for hiking. I bought the Z9 for BIF and Wildlife.
Now need to sell off other gear like the R5 and RF lenses if I plan to keep this very nice Nikon setup. Plan to keep the Sony gear for now.
