Took the Z9 and 800mm out for round a few days ago. My traditional hotspot for critters was notably slow and it took hours to find some subject matter to point the rig towards. I'm still working to dial in the camera to my tastes and still haven't had a good chance to try some high ISO shooting which is sort of an important part of what I tend to shoot. My lack of subject matter left me shooting the moon just for a "how sharp is this lens on this camera shot".

I'll add that I haven't quite figured

I am glad to see you are still alive and well Trey!! Nicely done on all of those, really like the Red Wing!

I am charging the battery on mine now, looks I have got a learning to do as well.

Likewise on the alive and well! I've been trying to get Tom Hicks to pick his camera back up but he is dragging his feet. I only have one Z lens - 100-400mm - so far that lens is very sharp and fast. This body feels pretty good in the hand. My only real learning curve is getting used to the EVF as I am so used to looking through the lens to search for stuff instead of using binoculars. I'm used to leaving the camera off and using that lens like a spotting scope but now I have to remember to wake up the camera. Not really a major issue but it frustrates me. First world problems.

I was only able to get out briefly over the weekend and it was during worst (harsh) light and only a couple geese were moving at all.

It did give me a chance to play with Highlight Weighted Metering though.

Take what ya can get... :-)

We are birds of a feather when it comes to using the EVF vs OVF. My main complaint so far is the the CF card cover, it SUCKS! I have good and bad days with my hands and while playing with it yesterday, I had a heck of a time trying to get the dang thing opened. With the D models it was easy to flip the button cover up with my thumb and press the button no matter the condition of my hands.

Going to order an Eye-cup and extra battery, so I'm getting the jar of Vaseline out and at the ready!

Tell Hicks hello!

Beautiful. Quick question. Do you shoot with both eyes open when shooting BIF? I always used one eye through VF and cannot pan like this. Either I or bird will faster

Wow, loving these! Especially #3 and #5. Thanks for sharing.
That 500PF + 1.4x combo looks superb on the Z9.

I'm with you on the card cover. Who thought that was a good idea?

I only have my right eye open. Left closed most of the time. I'm actually left eye dominant and used to shoot my DSLRs with left eye but changed over to right eye to get my face out of the way of the controls with smaller MILCs.

Thanks for the info Geoff. Amazing you can pan like this. I'm right hand and left eye dominant. Still use left eye with A1. I need to practice more. I have no issue with larger birds. Trying to practice more at smaller/faster flying birds.

Thanks Ross. I'm really enjoying it too. It works well "for me".

Lol! Fortunately not. They were pretty aggressive with any other goose or duck that dared float into their space. I just sat still and this pair ended up getting out of the pond and parking right in front of me - maybe 10 feet in front of me. I haven't gotten to those shots yet.

The Headshot" in this set was when they were "climbing" out of the pond, onto shore (there's about a 8~10 inch "step" from the water to land due to the drought.

This bird is so hilariously angry looking, nice shots.

Great shots from everyone !

Really nice that Nikon got a very good mirrorless camera, although they have good cameras with Z7ii and Z6II also
This benefits every other camera brand to get better too
Nice! like the old Nikon guy like me it really nice to see
Will be very interesting to see how the new 400mm f2.8 performs with Z9
