p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · I have a problem...

Ok, so I have realized for a while that I have been afflicted by GAS. I have always been able to justify what I am buying at least to myself...I am kind of easy on me though. All of my lenses have made sense to me. I think I have just crossed the barrier to potential insanity though. I bought a lens that I have watched for years, but never purchased since I realize that it doesn't have many redeeming qualities. I purchased the Canon EF 50 f/1.0L. Yes, I knew it wasn't going to be the sharpest, closest focusing, best control of flare or CA...ok, it might really be bad with some of these, but I am an absolute nut on isolating focus. I knew the lens was older and would be more difficult to repair, but here I am with the charge on my credit card just waiting for the lens to arrive.

I felt that I should reach out to others here...sort of a support group. I realize that I have gone off the deep end, but are there others like me? This is the time of year that I think brings out the syndrome.

I've never gone off the deep end with a multi-thousand dollar purchase on a collectors item type lens, but I definitely have GAS and have spent WAY too much on gear over the past decade. I actually trimmed down quite a lot in the past year. Last October, I had a full Sony kit with an A7r IV, a Fujifilm kit with X-T20 and the four mini primes, an R6, RP and growing Canon RF kit, plus a bunch of other stuff.

I now have sold my full Sony kit, my Fujifilm kit, and after juggling bodies a little bit, ended up picking up an R5 and then eventually selling my R6 for a used RP again (having sold my first one when I got the R5)....and while I have a lot of lenses, it's now one interchangeable lens system, one main body and one lower end backup body, plus a Fuji X100V for when I want to travel really light.

And that's it....but being honest it's still probably more than I should have.

It's too late I peeked at you profile and discovered you needed the 50L 1.0 to complete the set.

I can't believe that nobody has asked if it comes with the box.

I'm completely serious when I say that it wouldn't be a bad thing to have a real discussion of how to avoid the temptations of GAS. We all feel it, but deep down most of us also know that it is "never enough" and that it can interfere with our photography.

Looking on the bright side you could be a Leica M shooter who has a new chrome 50mm Summicron APO. I guess we can call it DEEP pocket GAS.

Did it come with a box?

To me GAS stands for Guitar Acquisition Syndrome I will say that I have thinned that herd to 6. There are others with way more. I knew a guy who had 75 -100....He had a big house.

The only cure for GAS is taking photos regularly. When you aren’t permitted to, you start fantasizing about what gear will make the perfect setup for you in the future.

Strongly agree. Developing a focus on photographs rather on photographic equipment helps a lot.

Strategies to doing this aren't obvious to everyone, unfortunately.

The best cure for GAS is to buy something for a few thousand $ that you later realize you didn't need. I find a regular dose of alcohol can cure the side effects.

Brian, I say that any man who doesn't own at least one of the legends of lenses is not only not a photographer but not a man at all! It takes Cajones to get a lens like that.
That lens will make a difference in your photography, plain and simple. I would put it on your camera and NEVER take it off. If you need to use another lens, get another camera!!! Congrats!

The comments are great. I knew this would be a good support group.

Mark and John, I am disappointed to say that it doesn't come with a box. Do you have a good source? I think John may have one somewhere.

For JMan, gdanmitchell and Jesse, I fully agree with you. The photography is what this is supposed to be about. At times, you end up stuck behind your computer keyboard rather than out taking photos, and that is probably when I get myself the most in trouble. I am looking forward to the upcoming holiday when I will have time to actually go out and use it more. Plus, the pesky manufacturers keep coming up with things that make me spend my money...like if Canon does release the 135 f/1.4L, I see some money leaving my house at this time.

jwcdds, my wife actually said YOLO to me. This is what helped get me in this. I think she is great.

Ferrophot, the funny thing is I normally buy items for a few thousand, but I never quite come to the realization that I don't need it all. With this said, this purchase has possibly just crossed that line. I might need the second part of your suggestion now.

JohnSil, I love that quote. I may have to print it out...at least after I buy another R5 that I apparently need.

I think we all have GAS to some degree with our favored hobbies.
The degree, extent, & guilt factor of it is measured only by the degree & extent of our means.

IMO these ultra fast lenses are a) very limited in value (the difference in bokeh for an f1.0 and f f1.4 to me is not significant and b)they are really not uncommon these days. You could buy a TTArtisan 50mm f0.95 for RF mount for $750, or the Rokinon 50 f1.2 SP for $1000, or the Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster f0.95 for $799, 7Artisans f1.05 for RF for $437. I suspect that most of those would match the Canon f1.0, albeit they are manual focus. No idea how much you spent on the Canon, but I think it was too much for what, as you seem to suggest, is not a very good ROI. But of course you can do what you want

Vintage collectibles, like the EF 50/1.0 L, live in a different price-performance universe than contemporary equipment. As for worth, it's worth exactly what you can sell it for.
