I feel ya, OP! I've acquired all of these, minus the 70-200, within the last 23 months. With patience, a lot of luck and time browsing, I was able to find all of these mint lenses for fractions of their real value. I did trade for the 600 though!

I have enough Canon luggage to las t the rest of my life now =)

IMO these ultra fast lenses are a) very limited in value (the difference in bokeh for an f1.0 and f f1.4 to me is not significant and b)they are really not uncommon these days. You could buy a TTArtisan 50mm f0.95 for RF mount for $750, or the Rokinon 50 f1.2 SP for $1000, or the Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster f0.95 for $799, 7Artisans f1.05 for RF for $437. I suspect that most of those would match the Canon f1.0, albeit they are manual focus. No idea how much you spent on the Canon, but I think it was too

I'm quite sure there is ABSOLUTELY zero justification to buy something like the 50/1.0L. Was expensive when it was released, remains expensive to this day. (Though arguably, with adjusted inflation, might be about the same.)

It's like collecting a small piece of photography history that comes with some mysterious lore that no one really knows, but kind of wonders about. Would be like having a 200/1.8. Or even the 1200 (but that's stratospheric level).

The fact that this relic lens AF at 1.0 (albeit slowly) is a marvel to behold. Thankfully, with mirrorless, new life has been breathed into these old relics.

For those who can, it keeps the hobby fun. And for those who can't, worry not as one's not missing out on too much.

David, you are in deep!

jwcdds, I totally agree with you. I can't justify this whatsoever, yet, here I own it. I will have some fun taking some pictures with it, but I have other lenses that I know will do a better job. This is why I put the post out here. I thought I must be going crazy with this one.

As a side note, I think the 200 f/1.8L is in a different class. It truly is a great lens. I have used it over many years, and I don't think it is capable of taking a bad picture. I call that one "My precious". My wife doesn't like that though. It is actually the only lens that I have named.

See how good I am at justifying these things to myself?

A good opportunity to revisit your archive of raw files. I invariably find plenty of images that I somehow passed over the first time.

You need the 200mm f2 to complete the set.

Considering your inventory listed in your profile, this purchase is small potatoes. Surprised you don't have the EF 85 1.2L since it is so similar to the 50...maybe time to pick up one!

I actually have the EF 85 f/1.2Ls and a RF 85 f/1.2L as well. I love those lenses. I do more portraiture, so these get their use. Those are very nice lenses optically, and I can justify them at least to myself. The 50 f/1.0L is just an oddball lens. It is much harder to justify and where I felt that I went over the edge (at least in my own mind). The 85s are optically superior, and they offer a number of advantages over the 50. The 50 is the first lens that I have to ask myself is it more of a "collector" type lens. I don't view myself as a collector. I normally only buy things to use. This is where I started to question what has happened to me over time!

To me GAS stands for Guitar Acquisition Syndrome I will say that I have thinned that herd to 6. There are others with way more. I knew a guy who had 75 -100....He had a big house.

I would have this, but I can't afford any guitars because I keep spending money on photo gear. So, one bad habit keeps the other in check! (... for now)

All of them work flawlessly on the R3 and R5. Especially the 300! Man, what joy that lens is on the R3

I am not an exception to have been afflicted by GAS. It didn’t help me in any way during last one decade (don’t see any need to describe its disastrous outcomes). If only gear are important in photography (don’t own anything like pinhole camera in my gear collection), I should have been ‘making’ outstanding images now. I have concluded it saying in my signature, “Gear-lust is a hindrance to photography”.

Good luck with the Canon EF 50 f/1.0L! You would be able to see its full potential on your R5 (assume your profile is updated). If you don’t like it, sell it. I believe you should be able to make some money doing so.

Ok, so I have realized for a while that I have been afflicted by GAS. I have always been able to justify what I am buying at least to myself...I am kind of easy on me though. All of my lenses have made sense to me. I think I have just crossed the barrier to potential insanity though. I bought a lens that I have watched for years, but never purchased since I realize that it doesn't have many redeeming qualities. I purchased the Canon EF 50 f/1.0L. Yes, I knew it wasn't going to be the sharpest, closest focusing,

If you have the time, could you take 1 picture of a grey fence with white background at f/8 like this one? No overexposed highlights in the raw file.
And perhaps also 1 picture of something with two straight lines, one at the top and one 1/3 down like this one?

I would like to add lens correction support for that lens. What I know Canon Digital Photo Professional (and Adobe too?) is missing that for Canon EF 50/1.0L USM.

Very Important that you do it in the order that you said . If you do it the other way around it might be worst

The EF 50/1.0 L USM is included in the (old) original photodo database. Most lenses in (old) photodo had resolution MFT test curves, and some had distortion data, as well. Problem is, the old photodo is long gone. The 'new photodo' retains some, but not most of the old information. I have a spreadsheet of the entire old photodo MFT scores, for all lenses. Unfortunately, I only kept copies of the extra info, like MTF curves, for a dozen or so lenses, not including the 50/1.0L.

Long story, short; if you can find the old photodo database in some wayback machine, then you might find some of the rare test data that exists in the open domain (or, did exist).

OTOH, I expect that that EF 50/1.0L will have simple barrel distortion, which is relatively easy to correct in PP. You can figure it out, and dial it in to some custom gizmo (action).

I have to figure out where a fence like that is around here. I will do it though. Please just give me 2-3 weeks. I assume this isn’t a rush.

Didn't know about photodo. Did a search at archive.org. I found 50/1.8 STM and 50/1.2L USM but no 50/1.0L USM. Had to be logged in also (in the past).
