I have only one. I either shoot low volume or volume at lower resolutions. The CF Express card is almost always used for backup.

So you use the SD card as your main and CF card as backup?

How times have changed!

We've come from a time when a 36-frame roll of film might typically take an hour or more to use up--to shooting that many frames in one split second.

I remember when I shot weddings we used 120 film. 12 shots per roll. Used 20 rolls for a wedding. If it was a BIG wedding 30 rolls. That's 240-360 photos for an 8 to 12 hour shoot

Yes, I have a decent supply of SD Cards and I am almost without exception a JPG shooter. They handle the workload sufficiently.

I don't. They're not compatible with some card readers and a travel drive/wallet that I have. That's why I have only one and I never use it as primary card, plus it's slower than the Lexar.

I recently bought a third Delkin 128GB. I have found two to be quite sufficient for "regular" (non-trip) shooting, but as I am going to Costa Rica in March (at least, that's still the plan), I decided to pick up a third one.

I have the R5 and the vast majority of what I shoot is wildlife. I settled on cRAW and have been very happy with it. I mostly shoot mechanical but have used electronic in specific situations.

I like the 128GB size for a few reasons:

1. You don't end up with all your eggs in one basket (card fails, camera with card in it is stolen, etc)
2. It's big enough (for me) that I have no problem getting a day's shoot on it so no fear of filling the card during a critical sequence
2. As somebody mentioned, entire weddings used to be photographed with 200 or so shots on film. Having digital gives more freedom to experiment, burst, take low-probability shots, etc. But, and this is just my opinion and that of a few others I have chatted with, there is a tendency to think about being able to shoot "unlimited" and lean on that too much. Some call it machine-gunning, others call it spray and pray. There are varying degrees of this of course, but there is nothing wrong with having a little control on the trigger, even with wildlife photography. Just because one can shoot 200 or 300 frames non-stop doesn't mean one has to!

As an aside, regarding the second point, another thing that helps me personally with control is my dislike of culling. For that reason, I don't tend to pop of massive sequences of photos such that I feel a need for bigger cards. This works well for me. YMMV.

I used to use several small cards for reasons you mentioned above but now I like the bigger cards for the following reasons:

1. No need to ever worry about filling a card at the wrong time, this is especially important if you shoot video, you sometimes need very large cards
2. No need to manage multiple cards in the bag. The more the cards and the more the handling the more chance you might drop or lose one.
3. You can use one card for a whole trip and just download one time when you get home.

The whole "all your eggs in one basket" is irrelevant as long as you backup at the end of each day. A small card could go bad as well, losing your whole day's worth of shooting. But if you backed up the day's content from this 2TB card every night then you are in the same position and there's no more risk in using this big card.

I saw the B&H deal come through to my email last night and I saw they had the firesale on the 2TB cards that John mentioned. I jumped on it right away as this deal is so insane. If you plan on shooting any video you should be jumping on this deal as it's only a few bucks more than cards that are 1/4 the size. You can use this card for external storage to backup other cards if needed. Amazing deal.

My reasoning is similar. My new storage arrangement has the 2TB Delkin card basically living in the R5 and I use the 256GB v90 SDXC Prograde Digital cards in the SD slot and record to both cards for stills. I have a couple of the 256GB cards that I rotate through, and the 2TB is my in-camera backup. It’s also great to have when I flip over to record some video.

I'll be using the same setup but I use the R5's for video and the format I use often has to be written to the CFexpress card so this Delkin 2TB deal is amazing for me. Thank you so much for mentioning the Delkin fire sale earlier in the thread because I have been on the lookout ever since. I couldn't believe it when I saw them on sale last night and if it wasn't for you mentioning "go big or go home" I wouldn't have searched for it. I'm guessing these things will work in the R1 in a couple years as well, so for now it's a one and done purchase that should last several years.

I just had a Sandisk 256gb Cfexpress card go bad in a 1DXIII so it just a reminder any card of any size can go bad at anytime. Might as well have the big card to limit clutter and just keep it backed up.

I don't disagree with your counterpoints artsupreme. I would say one key thing you mentioned is video. I don't shoot video so I don't pretend to know how fast one burns through a card doing that.

I shoot stills only and exclusively cRAW. I also make a fair bit of use of the 1.6 crop. If I was out for 16 hours on a safari, I would have to shoot one photo every eight seconds for the entire 16 hours to fill a 128GB card. If I do that, I am not being thoughtful in my shooting. That's just my perspective and style though.

Having started with a 10D, I had some extremely small CF cards to start (256MB if I recall correctly) and ended with many cards; the largest being 64GB. If I can, I like to keep my cards as one extra backup, so I have at times taken seven or eight cards on a trip, along with four batteries. I have one zip pouch in my bag that is for unused cards and charged batteries and another zip pouch that is for used cards and spent batteries. It's a simple system that worked well for me and will undoubtedly do the trick for three cards and three batteries.

"The whole "all your eggs in one basket" is irrelevant as long as you backup at the end of each day." I can't say I agree with this. I have read a few posts here detailing regimented backup processes but I know far more people who just rely on their card as their one and only "backup". So while you are right in saying if one backs up every night, a lot of people don't, because they don't or because they are tired after a long day of shooting and get "lazy". Plus, if one does shoot video, one could be using a few 128GB cards or one larger card. I would rather lose a partial day's shooting/recording due to a bad 128GB card than to lose a massive amount of video and photos due to a bad 512GB, 1TB or 2TB card.

Again, this is just me. Different shooting styles, settings, genre, philosophies and so on can easily justify different wants/needs for card(s). I certainly won't argue that the B&H sale is an incredibly good price / GB and worth buying for those that like to "go big or go home".

With so many valid alternate viewpoints, I don't know if we are answering the OP's question are creating more things for him/her to contemplate, but it is good to consider all these things when picking a card size(s).

Agreed. I have done the whole "container of cards" in the bag for 20 years and shuffled them from the unused container to the used container, backing them up, etc. It's worked and everyone has their methods depending on what they shoot. I shoot in harsh elements and underwater so for me changing cards in the field is often not desired or even possible. I could nearly burn through a 512gb card on a dive if shooting the most demanding video formats so this 2TB deal is a game changer. For guys shooting stills only on the R5 - some guys shoot repetitive fast action sequences at 20fps. This type of shooting would warrant a 256gb card to last for the day and you would spend $300-$400 on a good 256gb card already so the price of these 2TB cards is a no brainer.

I backup my content at the end of each day if possible so I will be good to go. With the R6's I was happy to get rid of all my memory cards and just let two 256 cards live in each camera. With the R6 that is basically unlimited shooting with redundant backup. I can use one set of cards for a whole trip and not even open the card door because everything is backed up on the second card. Now with the R5's and 2TB cards I can do the same with stills but most of the video won't be backed up to the SD card. It's so nice to get rid of all the piles of cards I have been carrying around for years.

Ah come on Artsupreme. Don't be timid. Go for it! . Grant it, if you drop the card, it could be a "deep dive" to retrieve it but think of the stories you will have to tell like no others.

I'm using two CFExpress cards, one Angelbird 512GB as my main card and one SanDisk 128GB as a backup card. Plus i have a bunch of spare 64GB SD cards just incase i need them.
