No excitement for this lens? Surprised there isn’t a post here about it yet. Had the Sony Tamron version, looking at the optical block diagram it’s the same lens and good to quite good, easy lens to shoot with. Hope it’s the beginning of more of their E lenses.

There a couple pages near the end of this thread: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1725659

Not interested (I have 24-70 2.8), so not a lot of feelings about it. Old Tamron design (not G2) that you can buy here for 899CAD vs... 1499CAD for the Nikon Z mount one. I think it will see price discounts mid '22.

Thanks, didn’t think to look there since it wasn’t on the road map!

Couple samples from the last go around with Sony. Was reviewing the shots I took of family (dont share those) and look forward to this lens. Agree it’ll see discounts but I’ll be adding one at some point.

These look really decent.

You can also look at it from a different viewpoint - it's 50% price of 24-70 2.8 MSRP here ($2999) & it's considerably lighter. If you don't need 24-28mm range... it's not terrible. I find myself often in that 24-28mm range.

Pre-ordered the 24-120/4Z and still hoping for a 70-200/4Z (I don't care who makes it as long as they can make it).

I bought one when initially released, one of a handful of lenses I’ve bought new, and I was never disappointed by it. With Nikon coatings and First Party AF protocols it’ll please a lot of folks.

Looking at the optical design of both lenses, I see a couple of important differences (e.g. a flat vs. a curved last element).

https://nikonrumors.com/2021/12/14/nikkor-z-28-75mm-f-2-8-lens-additional-coverage-the-first-tamron-lens-for-nikon-z-mount.aspx/#more-164840

EDIT: Nikonrumors.com does not show the exact Tamron lens that the Nikon 28-75mm f/2.8 should be compared to. See comments below.

Nikonrumors did not post the correct optical design. The "Nikon" 28-75 is identical to the older Tamron linked here:

This lens looks very similar to the newly announced Nikon lens indeed!

The previous Tamron 28-75/2.8 f/2.8 Di III RXD ("G1") has 15 elements in 12 groups, like the Nikon Z, with 1x molded aspherical, 1x hybrid aspherical, 1x LD and 1x XLD.
See here.
Here is the optical scheme:
https://cdn.idealo.com/folder/Product/6072/8/6072807/s10_produktbild_max_4/tamron-28-75mm-f2-8-di-iii-rxd-sony-e.jpg
Here are the MTF plots: 28mm, 70mm.
You can compare to 28-70 Z's:
https://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/z-mount/z_28-75mmf28/spec.htm
Nikon has probably tweaked the original Tamron design, as minor differences in (calculated) MTF plots suggest.
The link above (nikonrumors) shows the G2 Tamron zoom, i.e. the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (model A063), which is a better lens than the "G1" version.

If Nikon went with the G2 version, a “S” badge would have been warranted. It’s a great lens.
The older lens probably fits best with the two Z 24-70s.

I’ll have to look up the G1 vs G2 comparisons but out the gate I dont understand the issue with using the G1 design, it was a great and wildly popular lens, the biggest nitpick being build quality which Nikon obviously will have fixed (worth a premium alone IMO). Absolutely doesn’t give anything up to Nikons other compromise lenses like the 24-200 for example. Their S lenses will be and should be better but it’s pretty cool to see first party releasing something like this (even if it’s a ported third party lens). Hopefully it’s a sign of further steps Nikon will take to bridge the lack of third party lenses, I’d be okay with that compromise.

Let's see if there are differences, e.g.

- manufacturing of the aspherical lens
- coating
- narrower tolerances
- overall improvements in quality control
- weather sealing
- durability of materials
- tightness of the zoom and focus ring

Lenses with the same optical design can still be quite different. (Not saying this lens necessarily will be different or better, for that matter.)

INteresting idea, but Nikon missed a huge opportunity to fill real gaps in teh lineup.

Nikon currently offers 5 mid-range zooms in FX and 2 more in DX.
Nikon offers exactly one telezoom, with a second on the way fairly shortly, both high-dollar lenses.

Tamron has an excellent and diminutive 70-180/2.8 in E mount that’s the size & weight of a 70-200/4, as well as a good consumer 70-300 that’s smaller and lighter than Nikon’s F-mount 70-300E even before you take the FTZ into account. Either of those would have solved real problems in the Z lineup for Nikon. The 28-75 does not do anything except confuse the mid-range, offering a 24-70/4 and a 28-75/2.8 in the same space and rough cost range.

Unless you really need f2.8 and can’t spring for the 24-70 (or get a used 24-70G on an FTZ), the cheaper and smaller 24-70/4 S is the better choice every time for the Z shooter.

In fairness the G2 has a newer design, but the old Tamron isn't exactly old, and it wasn't poor so will be curious myself how much it improved.

Nikon, on their website, did mention weather sealing and some "special" Nikon glass:
"
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.

Super ED Glass
Nikon has also developed Super ED glass featuring even lower dispersion properties and extremely high performance in reducing the secondary spectrum, to minimize chromatic aberration even further, as well as other lens aberrations.
"
What that really means, who knows.

This focal length would really work well with the 14-30 as a nice lightweight travel setup. But I do want the extra reach of the 24-120mm. 70-75mm is often too short for me when I am traveling.
I am sure that this is a high mprofit margin item for Nikon since there shouldnt be all that much R&D involved. But I just dont see how it really slots in when there are so many options already in that space.

This looks like a "cost little to introduce" lens. Probably paid next to nothing to Tamron to use the basic lens formula and then just did a bit of tweaking and a good way to swell the lens arsenal without much cost input. Maybe Tamron are even manufacturing it for Nikon with strict quality standards which frees up Nikon's lens manufacturing base. I wouldn't be surprised if they do this more often with 3rd party manufacturers as it means they can sort of keep them happy without having to give up lens protocols.

I had no idea that Nikon did not make all their own lenses.
