Have you heard of anyone adapting the CV 40/1.2 to Z mount?

I tend to like different lens characteristics for different usages.

I really am impressed by the astounding level of sharpness and detail captured by both the 35mm 1.4 GM, and the 50mm 1.2 GM lenses. These are what I use when doing certain types of images. They deliver really impressive image quality, are not too large, have amazing focus accuracy and speed due to their linear motors.

I also have lenses that I purchased based on their unique personalities in rendering. Primarily these types of lenses tend to be manual focus Cosina Voigtlander lenses. I really like the CV line of

Or delete it. There’s nothing useful here.

I’ve done it, and the 21/1.4 and several Loxia’s. Actually I prefer them on Nikon, the focus aid turning green is better and the slightly thinner stack is more beneficial than harmful IMO.

Since it is a MF lens I would expect that it works very well on Nikon Z cameras with any of the adapters that transmit data.

Do you have a preferred E to Z adapter? The $250 Techart is way overkill for this application. I usually use dumb Kent Faith adapters for my legacy glass.

To take full advantage you need the smart adapter, that transmits the needed info for focus point to change red to green when you hit focus. On the other hand, it can be spotty getting newer computers to recognize the dock for updates and some cheaper lenses like Rokinons can brick it. Still, IMO it’s worth it for kids etc. (not so much for landscapes) otherwise I have a Haoge that works well and is compact which is nice BUT recently it’s started sticking on the lens some and the release is looking weak (and needs removed from body to swap lens.) So I liked it till recently but I have some concerns about it. I had a Pixco that was the only option early on. Works fine but it’s huge and looks odd on the camera/lens. So… I like the lenses on the bodies but all the adapters come with some baggage.

As a former Sony user and one who appreciates both brands, Nikon users are generally no better (or worse) when it comes to threads like these.

I can say the opposite also. Sharpening in optimum amounts does wonders. And try toning down a Sigma DP2 Merrill file…the crunchy ness never goes.

No right or wrong answer here since it is personal preference. But to me I would rather have the optically sharper lens in 2022 because the results look better when I want to soften something in post. Instead of trying to make something look sharper in post that was softer. To my eye it just doesn't look as natural. I also think it helps if you are cropping heavily. But again personal opinion. No right answer here. Luckily we have so many lenses to choose from both bases are covered.

I've read and just re-read throught this whole thread. Some interesting information mixed in with highly spirited and caustic hot messes..

In the end, this thread has confirmed my belief that we are at a good point in photography.

A few years ago - not really many actually - I would have died to have the choice of two such capable camera systems and the lenses we have .

And now, my lid is being placed on this pot...

I don't shoot with 70-200 lenses, can't help you there. @JadedWriter has more experience there.

I don't have the GMII, but I have a good copy of the first version. I know the Z beats out the GMI, by like a lot to me, know nothing about the GMII though, kind of don't want to divert Z money into buying it anytime soon either.

I'll soon rent a 70-200 GM ii and spend some time shooting with it on an a1.
I had the z 70-200 for a few months and shot a lot with it as well.
Will be happy to share my thoughts once that happens.

Split hair on performance maybe? but weight wise, Sony win this one. No?

Yes, it's lighter and shorter...I think by a few hairs.

Figured I'd pop back in here with a 2-month update.

As with all new gear acquisition, it tends to light a fire in me to get out and shoot, and I've been doing just that, particularly with the 100-400.

The weakest element of the Z7ii compared to Sony is the AF, but I'm making the AF work "well enough" for me. It's definitely better than the R3 and considerably worse than the R4. The burst speed/blackout is also a challenge, but you do something enough and you get used to it. I'm still getting BIF shots that I'm happy with, and far more than my R3 ever gave me.

The biggest positive of the whole experience has been the glass...I have absolutely zero bad things to say about the 24-120. It's silly sharp wide open, it focuses fast in AF-C, it handles CA the best I've seen in this class, it's nicely balanced, has great contrast in the RAW files.

Similarly, the 100-400 is easily the top performer of the Big 3 mirrorless versions of this lens. There's not a shot where I'm not impressed by the bokeh transitions and color pop. Now that reports of this lens with the Z9 are out, I'm pretty confident that focus racking back and forth/losing subjects is more the fault of the Z7ii and not the lens.

The Z7ii body itself...not a huge improvement over the Sony, but I'm slowly unwinding years of muscle memory. I'm eager to see what a Z7iii might look like in terms of Z9 trickle down. I have a ton of desire for a Z9-capabilities body, but no desire for a full on DSLR sized body with integrated grip and twice the weight.

For the vast amount of my shooting, the Z7ii will fit the bill. I'm loving the files, the colors, and the overall experience of creating with it.

I told you what feels like months ago that you'll get used to it. Hopefully with Z7III trickles down the Z9 screen and programming the AF modes to Fn buttons...and the overall layout.

Nice set, Scott. I think many of us who "grew up" on Nikon back in the SLR and DSLR times are really rooting for Nikon to make a huge comeback. I love the files they produce and the handling of their gear. If there is ever a Z7iii with the AF and operational speed of the Z9 but the size/weight of a Z7 + articulating screen, I'd seriously consider picking one up.
