p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · ? - Using DxO Photolab5 with Lightroom

I just downloaded the free trial of DXO PhotoLab5 as my goal was to compare it to Lightroom, which I have used almost exclusively. I was willing to switch over completely, pending a bit of learning.

That said, it turns out PL5 does not yet import directly to SmugMug, which I use to host my photos. Or at least I haven't learned if PL5 works directly with SmugMug.

So for now, it looks like I can import to PL5, make my adjustments, and then import to LR. If I'm thinking incorrectly, I'd be grateful for any guidance. Ultimately, I'd love to simplify my workflow as much as possible and admittedly, I'm a minimalist when it comes to cataloguing.

This may sound petty, but I tried Photolab 5 but the one thing that slowed me down on my work flow is the cropping tool. It has to so many steps. I just want to hit the crop button and grab the edge and move it up or down. I can do this very quickly in Lightroom. Just the cropping tool was enough to get me frustrated and stop using it.

It is exactly like ACR or Lightroom. You hit the Crop tab, grab the handle and adjust. I don't know what steps you are referring to.

One other issue with PL5 which is really frustrating - they are very slow to accept new RAW formats. I have the Olympus OM1 (new in March 2022) and it seems to be impossible to get a raw file from that camera into PL5. LR and PS processed them on day 1 but still no support from DXO. DNG files (I tried that route) are not seen as proper raw by DXO (I'm guessing) as DNGs cannot use deep prime or other raw only tools.

Your first point about DxO being slow to cover new RAW formats is probably true.

But DxO Photolab 5 does treat DNG files as RAW, at least DNG files out of certain camera systems. I just tried a DNG file out of my DJI Phantom drone and subjected it to DeepPrime and other corrections. DxO seems to have the module for that camera system as the sharpening slider worked, too.

When you hit the crop tool in LR you actually turn the image, in Photolab it only turns the box around the image. I hope that makes sense.

Have you tried going into the Geometry module and using the 'Horizon' slider? It rotates the image and the crop adjusts. See the settings below, as an example. You need to have 'Correction' set to Auto -

Correct, but being able to crop the image and change the horizon all in one swoop instead of copping the imaging and then having to do an extra step for the horizon is just enough to slow down the work flow. The key word is flow. Having to click in a totally different area to straighten the horizon messes up the flow.

That's what I wrote in my review a few months ago. This tool is very badly implemented, and it's of course not like in LR.

Otherwise, my general workflow with PL is :

culling in fastrawviewer
open culled files in DPL5, apply deep prime and distorsion correction on EVERY picture
export them in DNG
finish the job in C1, or sometimes LR for some specific presets
