p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fine tuning camera heads for astrophotography?

Does anyone take photos that require high precision at high zoom?

For my telescope, I have micro adjusters that allow me to adjust the angle a tiny bit. With my tripod (I use the Peak design carbon) and camera (Sony a7iii), the adjustments aren't that precise.

Has anyone found replacements for the ball heads that allow for higher precision adjustments?

Thanks in advance!

you are not going to like the answer. that whole tripod was not designed for precision work.

you forgot on a more stable tripod. i mean if one is looking for a higher level of precision.

I use a relatively inexpensive start tracker (Vixen Polarie), and I find that it is a ton easier to get alignment when I use my geared head (Benro gd3wh).

It's not nearly as bulletproof of a setup as a real GEM, but I find that it does pretty well for my light usage and I've been able to get a couple of OK shots of nebulae with my dslr and 100-400 (on a home-brew counterweight system).

The limitation now is that I lack a nice polar alignment scope, something I will remedy if I find myself pulling this contraption out more than two or three times a year.
