With a limited budget and the absence of requiring the best of autofocus, I have seen little to suggest the need to purchase a Z9. Happy to be convinced otherwise though. I'd certainly love to have one, but at this point I don't think I need one without shifting more time to birding or sports. I think the old saying that money is best spent on glass is still a good one....although I'm living proof that one can go overboard with that too.

I still look back at my D750 images and wonder if my current images are much better in

I'll say this one more time just to be clear. I in NO WAY intended to start another debate about systems. There is nothing I find more pointless or boring than those discussions. No offense to anyone who enjoys them. I was simply expressing my distaste and weariness for nonsensical hyperbole.

A 20mp slappy shutter D6 is not at all comparable to the 45mp eshutter Z9 IMO

i will say that yes a Z9 does make things easier but, i have shot plenty of images that have worked out for production and other things over the years.

here are some slap shutter shots from years past. lots more of varying views and camera bodies

I have the Z9 and I like it (I don’t LOVE it yet). I had a D810 and 2 D850s. I’ve also owned medium format (Hassy and Fuji GFX). I went mirrorless in 2015 with the Sony A7rii. I have to say the best user experience with great IQ were the d850s. I was shooting professionally and they were all around the best cameras for how and what I shot. I did portrait work, nothing more “active” than a couple of crazed toddlers on the beach and owned a portrait studio. I also had the A7riii and A7riv. If I were a sports shooter and shot with a D6 currently no way would I recommend moving to the Z9. The F glass is going to be phenomenal for another decade even without any updates. If you fall prey to FOMO go rent one and you’ll see. To answer the OP, just look at the resale prices on any recent gear when something new comes out. People are selling their barely used Z9’s for $4800 - that should tell you something.

This is of course a gear forum and part of the goal is to share experiences and observations for the goal of helping others…..so comparison of gear is helpful and I’m not sure you need to worry.

People have talked me into gear and some posts on this site have kept me from buying gear with some balanced info. This site has been very useful to me even though you have the caveat that people will of course have their own biases. It’s all good.

I started researching the Z9 and that lead me to the D6 than onto the Z7ii and now today the D850. The D850 is very affordable on the used market.

If I was to go with a Z body I would buy new, if a D body the path I would take is used. When grouping the Z9 & D6 and Z7ii & D850 the cost difference between each one is about the same. Below costs account for additional extras (battery, flash cards, FTZ , battery grip etc.).

New Z9 - $6,508
Used D6 - $4,350
New Z7ii - $4,123
Used D850 - $1,940

Nikon Z7ii
Z7ii Body
MH-25A Charger
EN-EL18c Battery
USB-A to USB-C Cord
EH-7P AC Adapter w/ USB-C Output
Nikon Z Strap
$2,596.00

Additionals
EN-EL18c Battery $170.00
CFexpress Type B 256GB $270.00
CFexpress Type B 256GB $270.00
FTZii Mount Adapter $250.00
MB-N11 Battery grip $397.00
EN-EL18c Battery $170.00

Entry Cost $4,123.00

I'm guessing some of those additionals are overkill and not required.

Get a used Z7II for ~$1800 and the whole math changes (or a Z7 for $1300).

Not sure why you want 2x EN-EL18C batteries that don't fit a Z7II?

Get a used FTZ adapter (~$100, if you really need one). No need to spend $500 on memory cards either (at the frame rate Z7II offers you don't really need expensive cards & Z7II has only 1 CFE slot... (Prograde Gold 256GB are on sale for $140, 128GB are sub $100).

Really boned that one, cut and paste from my Z9 page.

One EN-EL15c battery @ $69.00
One Prograde Gold 256GB @ $140.00

Not seeing any used FTZii adapters for $100

As for a used Z7ii I don't see an upside to paying 69% retail on used. I look at camera gear the same way I look at a tool, I will pay 50% retail for good used and up to 65% retail for like new condition so anything over that I will just buy new.

There's plenty of FTZ (non-II) in that price range. In the end your math is off by almost $900 & if you want 50% off - get a Z7 (current FW makes it almost on par with Z7II).

At this point if I was just getting into a system I wouldn't be buying a used DSLR (unless it was a steal of a deal D5/D6 and I had no plans to use Z mount lenses).

If I jump into a new Nikon body next year it will be either the Z9, Z7ii or maybe the unicorn everyone is calling the Z8. My whole science project on new vs used value was based around a used DSLR against a new Z body.
Z9 <--> D6
Z7ii <--> D850

Not looking to buy a used Z body, however if I was to buy another DSLR than that would be on the used market.
