p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Once the Z9 becomes widely available (say late 2022), what do you think would be the resale value of a D6?

It is factual that the D5/D6 sensor was optimized for high ISO DR. As a former owner of these 2 cameras I know how good they are.

But.. comparisons are often done in LR which is a really pretty terrible option in terms of image quality. One of the worst there is these days.

Images processed with DxO tell a different story because the ability of Deep Prime to extract usable information from noise does tend to favor higher res sensors.

Let’s also not forget that Nikon has designed the Z9 from the ground up to outdo the D6 and image quality is usually considered by Nikon as the top priority. So my guess is that the Z9 will overall be at least as good at normally used high ISO values, meaning 12,800 and 25,600.

Considering it's a very rare occurrence when I shoot over ISO3200 this is certainly encouraging. ISO3200 on my R5 is dead quiet which is what I prefer. I would expect the Z9 to match or exceed it for sure. Can't wait to put it through it's paces

my Z6 is excellent at 3200 and with a little post help can go into nosebleed territory

Switching from Canon ot Sony has been a constant consideration because of the sensor but some of the work I'm seeing from the Z7 has been impressive and a Z9 with the new 400/1.4 2.8 could be my future. Please keep this confidential.

Nosebleed territory, I like that :-) Or maybe “noisebleed territory” 😆
Which noise reduction software are you preferring? I have not yet tried anything outside of Lightroom.

You're missing out. DXO's Prime is in another zip code from ANYTHING Adobe ever did. I dumped everything Adobe years ago and never looked back. DXO Photolab 5 runs complete rings around it in every regard. Their NR is now legendary and #1 in capabilities.......even superior to the offerings from Topaz.

If the Z9 isn't available for my company until the second quarter of '22, I will continue to use the D6 through basketball in March...no worries.

ISO 6400-12,800 is unmatched on the D6 and face recognition AF is excellent for basketball, once you have dialed in your settings.

The price for a used D6 may fall to less than half of what it was purchased for but the camera still produces exceptional quality for sports/action.

Someone who picks up a D6 for $3,000 is getting an incredible performer...and bargain.

I have DXOPL and Topaz De-Noise AI.

IMO, DXOPL is no better than Topaz De-Noise AI.

They are *both* superb at removing all "deep" noise.

Just use the RAW option in Topaz.

In the end, to each his own.

I could see myself picking up another D6 later on if I needed to fill a gap the Z9 didn't. I don't really see that happening, but until we know how it does for ISO it's wait and see. What would need to happen for me to do that would be low clicks (<100k), excellent condition, and a great price. I don't see the price dropping that much over the next year unless Z9 back-orders clear before then. Even then the pros using a D6 will have to spend some time with their Z9 before they quit the D6. Bird in the hand folks... Bird in the hand.

Do you think the Z9 is at the retail locations yet? I mean, if they are to ship on December 15 they aren't going to arrive at the retailers on December 15. It isn't uncommon for retailers to get their inventory of a new release a week or more ahead of the announced ship date. So, any anonymous camera store employees on the forum care to weigh in? Are they at the dealers yet? Have a great day all!

In the past they have gotten them as little as a day before!

How does DXO handle lens correction when they have not profiled your lens?

they don't and advise you that it is not supported at this time. there are other things you can do in it but the optical corrections
no.

i just move into PScc and use what they have to offer which if available is a bit cruder but better than what we had years ago. not an issue. i've been dealing with this for a long time. minor stuff.

They still won't use the manufacture's profile? That is a big negative for me. Oh well.

what do you mean?

if you are thinking that their going to drop the ball, think again. what did you do before there was all these options. the data you need for LR and PS i. it ain't big. remember DXO plays somewhat nice with LR. for all we know DXO could be getting what they need from Nikon before its out the door.

what are you so worried about?

there is no guarantee that all software out there will be updated by day one.

and if all else fails you have NX Studio. i always have that standing by for worst case scenario.

I don’t know what ball you are talking about them dropping.

I am talking about going to DXO as my main app and dropping LR. I don’t want to do that if they can’t use the lens profile. I do not want to run multiple photo editing apps. I like a simple workflow.

i have and do simple workflow too*. but then nothing is perfect all of the time so one needs to be prepared

*ACDsee as my light table transfers into DXO, PScc or NX Studio as required which in the case of DXO and NX Studio i transfer into PScc for finishing and then to print or distribute as needed. thats on both base and portable pc

DXO is an independent company that does their own testing. if they haven't the product to test it may take a few days after release to gather what they need for a batch of brand-new released products. it will happen just possibly not instantaneously

remember i am a big proponent of DXO and have used it possibly longer than most here

you never practiced proper planning prevents poor performance? it is the mantra i practice and teach.

i work with the concept of back up tools. i've been doing this a long time.

like i said then you work with NX Studio. you haven't yet learned what can occur when you want to play on the bleeding edge. i'm not going to have an issue because i am prepared for the just in case and then possibly the maybe nothing.

DON'T PANIC! it will all smooth over.

addendum: i never gave up on PScc. it has some neat little tricks that are highly usable for the appropriate moments. at $10+tax a month and getting LR as a booby prize along with some junk to put on the ipad too. its well worth the the 2 cups of starbucks i don't drink as it is.

My plan if I stick with the Z9 is I'll be using the Studio NX for RAW processing and transferring it over to DXO Photolab 5. A FAR superior program to anything Adobe makes or for that matter ACDSee as I've had them both before. DXO is so intuitive and powerful by comparison. When they update it for Nikon it will rock altogether as superior and allow their Prime NR to be used as well.

well if thats what you want to do. but then you lose a few of the features of DXO. kind of pointless since it does most of its work in RAW to begin with. as with any other camera that goes through DXO too. it is one of the best overall RAW editing tools out there.

all i use ACDsee for is a light table and it accesses my database which i built over 17 years back when i was working with Canon raw

the starting point ACDsee and the drill down and pull up a sing image to inspect.
simple and linear

I really have no idea if this was a response to my post or not. It starts out like it is but then you start talking about practicing, back up tools, PS, bleeding edge…and finally PANIC.

But, we certainly have a different definition of workflow simplicity. That is a fact.

there is most likely a difference. i generally have to perform and get this out. my workflow is quite simple though, but it has certain requirements.

the way you do come off is like everything needs to be in place when the new stuff is released (maybe that got garbled in translation). sometimes that does not happen so if its important one resorts to hopefully plan B which is ready to go.

my workflow is generally 3 parts
1- look and inspect
2- work/edit
3- finish and output

i'm sorry that we don't see eye to eye. i worked 2 careers in parallel for over 33 years of my life and one of them taught me how to work with control in the other especially under real pressure.
