I have not done enough flight yet to see if they solved completely but so far I have not got the focus to just hang there. If not fixed fully then definitely in the right direction.

Sweet! I love most everything about mirrorless except for this oof AF lock phenomenon. It's so frustrating at times.

Still do not have the hand + with the RF 400 or 600mm like with the 100-500mm same as the R5.

Wonder what Jared was shooting with, then (firmware wise).

Took photos of my kitchen (booked in meetings until 7). Definitely will be using raw and not c-raw on this one, my espresso maker looks clearly better without compression, exposed for the espresso maker or exposed for the outside and then pushed. Didn't have that problem with the R5.

You make a good point, his video clear shows the hand +. I tried switching settings and it never showed up. I put the 100-500 on and it is there. No sure why his has it or more so why mine does not.

Mine doesn't have it either. Sad day. And man configuring all the AF options will be a pain.

What settings? Did you try switching the IS on the lens to 1,2 or 3 to see if it works then?

Yes tried that and tried Av, TV, M etc. Turned C1 off which I have set. Nothing worked. The 100-500 worked no matter what. I assume it is not a setting. I also tried TC's on and off too.

I see in the manual you can manually enter the focal length of the lens for lenses that don't support lens communication. Maybe your lens FW has a glitch and you could manually set the focal length?
Page 284
If the R3 recognizes your lens then this "focal length" setting will not be available. That would at least tell you if it is properly supporting your lens.

Got out today with my new R3 and the RF 100-500 c/w TC 1.4. I came across a coyote while looking for a northern harrier. I shot raw eye focus and focus area full. It worked really well. I put the camera on a red-tail in a very branch busy tree. The focus went right to the focus mark on the hawk and a small square on it's head even thought it was facing the other direction. When the coyote appeared out of the tall grass it locked right on. One try but I really like the auto focus so far. Hopefully I can get some hawk flight shots tomorrow.

Since there's no R3 tech talk, I'll add one bewilderment: So this camera is one of the "bigger ones", with a built-in vertical grip. Having owned every 1D camera except the 1DX3, I think this is the first one that doesn't have a built in loop at the bottom for a hand strap. WTH? Now I have to wait for the Kirk L plate...

I recall a guy on the canon rumors website noticing this from the pre-release images. He went on a tirade about how big a fail it was and how it proved Canon is out of touch with its user base. He sold all his Canon stuff and switched to Sony. I've never used a hand strap, but they must be nice if its worth the thousands of dollars it costs to switch systems.

I would say that guy was nuts, but yes, it is a big fail.

Nice coyote. Was this a deep crop? Eyes do not look tack sharp - not a criticism - I know how few of mine are critically sharp..

Wex Photo Video put up an informative, 91-minute long "walk thru" video on YouTube on how to set up an R3.

It was the first time that I had seen images of the bottom of the camera, and its absence of a lug to attach a hand strap to the bottom.
I use a hand strap and I will connect it to an Arca Swiss plate that has a suitable lug.

I tried that for the heck of it but no go as that is for a lens with no IS. Very curious how Jarid's shows up and mine does not.

Yeah, I just thought that maybe if your particular FW wasn't up to snuff on your lens then maybe this would "trick it" into seeing it thus giving you the hand + IBIS. It was worth a shot at least. It is odd that his has it and others don't especially being there is no published FW updates for that lens.

Edit: Your Snowy makes me yawn every time I look at him.

Still waiting on the R3 but my R5 with firmware Ver.1.4.0 and 100-500 Ver.1.1.0 has hand+ but R5 with RF 600mm f4 Ver.1.0.5 does not.

drewmacphoto that is a nice close shot of the Great Horned. Love the beautiful orange eyes. The GH's up here are up high and tucked in.
