Drove 50 miles to buy an A7RIVA today at the Black Friday sale price. When I arrived they brought out the only one they had and I noticed the top of the box had a big dent in it and a big hole ripped in the side. This was at Best Buy. I inspected the camera and other items in the box and all looked fine. Took it home with me and they assured me I could return or exchange it if needed. Camera works great and no issues. Nothing looks scratched or damaged. However as silly as it sounds the banged up box bothers me. I mean something had to hit it pretty hard to dent and tear open the box like that . A. Would you just keep it and move on. B. Take it back and have them order another one. My gut says B. Opinions? Thanks

Only the box, right and the camera works flawlessly? Personally, I would choose A but you are the buyer/user.

If the camera works fine, I wouldn't worry about the box. I guess you can decide if a pristine box is worth your time driving the camera 50 miles back and again to pick up a new one...I know how I'd answer that question...but you need to make up your own mind.

It is still under warrantee as new correct? I always buy such items with my Amex Card which doubles the original warrantee.

Damage from impact usually shows up pretty fast.

Thanks guys. Yes still under warranty. Works perfectly and I even have a 45 day return exchange period since I am an Elite Plus Member at Best Buy. Only the box was damaged. Not even the little compartments inside the box were damaged. I think you are right. Do not worry about the box. Sometimes my OCD can get the better of me. Heck if I exchanged it I might get a perfect box but there is something wrong with the camera. lol. Anyway I will just keep it and put it through its paces to make sure all is good. So far so good though.

When you say big hole ripped on the side, is the UPC code still on the box?

Sometimes, when manufacturers offer a rebate they ask you to cut out the UPC code and mail it in to receive the rebate. If it’s missing, I might be suspicious that someone bought it, got a rebate, then returned it.

Pretty unlikely, since the camera is relatively new, but might explain how a box got so damaged.

Personally, if they are able to get me another one at the same price, I would probably return it and get a new one. Might make resale easier if you ever sell it.

But damage from impact isn't covered under a warranty. (unless you bought some kind of insurance)

Depends on how much you paid for it. A nice box helps with resale if you ever want to sell it. Can they bring a better sample in from another store?

I suggest trying for a small credit or gift card to compensate for the damage. 10% would be typical yet at this price I'd be satisfied with a $100 gift card.

Sure they can order another one. They have them in stock just not at any local stores. Resale is certainly something to consider.
I paid the full sale price of 2998.00. Maybe I will exchange it. I don’t have to travel to the Best Buy 50 miles away but can do so at another Best Buy much closer to me.

UPC code still there. Shutter count 7 so it’s new. Resale is a consideration though. Yea I think I want another one. Why wouldn’t I. I have my older A7RIV and an A9 to use so it’s not like I don’t have a camera to use.

How much is 2 hours of your life + gas in exchange for what may be additional “resale” value of a box if you decide to sell the camera body down the road? IMHO, not worth it.

Resale should NEVER be a consideration in any gear purchase. Are you a photographer or a reseller?

Good or bad, it's a consideration especially since Sony keeps coming with the new models and one may want to upgrade.

The next camera might have experienced even more trauma, just in a way that did not damage the box.
I am buying a camera, not a box. I could care less what the box looks like. Perfect box might be worth $10 if I ever resell- not worth my time.
Look, you got a great camera- one built well enough to survive shock and keep working!
Go take some pictures.

For just normal deliveries a bent or damaged box is regular fare nowadays. I wouldn't worry about it personally.

Honestly i wouldn't bother, 50 miles just to get a nicer looking box? Not worth imo. If the camera looks and works fine i would keep it and didn't think about it ever again.

How often do you look at the camera box? Probably the first time you pick it up and then second and last time when you sell it years later... if you ever do that.

Ask them to send the new camera to your store. I can't imagine they'd refuse.
For $3000. I'd want a flawless product.
