p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamaron 28-75 f/2.8 or Sony 24-105 f/4?

Hello,

I was wondering of these two (Tamaron 28-75 f/2.8 or Sony 24-105 f/4) which lens is sharper at f/11-ish for ranges between 28mm and 50mm (for landscape type of shots). I am in a dilemma that I can take only one for my trip, that lens I'm planning to use between 28-50mm for landscapes and also for portraits at 75mm or longer. I'm leaning towards Tamaron for the f/2.8 wider aperture factor, but I can live with f/4 since I'm taking my 90mm f/2.8 macro and that can be used for portraits as well at 90mm. So the decision factor is sharpness and image quality between 28-50mm at f11-ish. I never used the Tamaron for landscape since I was mostly shooting with primes and I cannot take all the primes for this trip.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Shibu

My copy of the Tamron is closer in performance to my primes than my 24-105 is. But you should be able to get great shots from either of them.

Tamron 28-75/F2.8 G2 is sharper than Sony G 24-105/F4 there is no doubt here. That being said at F11 difraction already kicks in, so it may be a wash between these two. Still at F4-F8 Tamron is a clear winner performance wise + added bonus of F2.8 if ever needed.

If you don't want 24mm you might as well go with the Tamron. For me, personally, 28mm is not wide enough.
Why don't you check out the 24-105 pictures thread? https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1612097/0

I'm taking 21mm voigtlander to cover below 28mm, but I cannot take more primes to cover 28 to 50mm

My Sigma 14-24 is better at 24 than my 24-205, even at landscape apertures. I also carry the Sigma 105 macro as a dual purpose lens, so the 28-75 is going to be my go to zoom since it competes better with my primes than my 24-105.

A lot of these choices really come down to personal preference and priorities. I do like and will continue to use my primes in that range.

In this case I've to chose between 24-105 and 28-75, I've used 24-105 many times for landscape work, but not 28-75, it was pretty much in my cabinet the whole time. Looks like 28-75 is the winner based on the feedback here and wider aperture which I can use for some portraits and street stuff.

Okay, one thing to clarify. I’m talking about the recently released VXD G2 version of the 28-75, not the original RXD version.

If you are talking about the original version of the Tamron, take my comments with a grain of salt. The new G2 is improved, and I don’t know how the original compares to the 24-105.

When I tested the 28-75 G1 against the 24-105, the 24-105 was sharper at all focal lengths. I ended up selling the 28-75 as a result of this comparison. The new 28-75 G2 appears sharper than the 24-105. I think in most cases you won’t notice a difference unless you are pixel peeping identical photos. So I would choose based on focal length and aperture needs.

Honestly, until now I didn't even know they released a 2nd gen for 28-75, thanks for the info. Mine is the RXD, I bought this two years back and only used few times for portraits, so don't know about the sharpness of the lens for landscape, may be I should test before I pack.
