Hey Stephen see you had a good time at the Salton Sea and found a burrowing owl....congrats!

Thanks again so much, Jim!. And yes some owls, the geese of course, the cranes, a green heron, some Ibises (had never seen any of the previous 3 before), avocets, more egrets than I've ever seen in one place, lots of harriers (though none came particularly close), etc. And all of that on the one stretch of Vendel.

It’s an expensive F2.8 lens. I would rather adapt the noble EF 135 F2.0 for 1/2 the price or, if size/weight/cost was less important, carry a 135 F1/8 or 70-200 F2.8 zoom.

I've been considering this lens because I like the idea of having a 24GM, 35GM, and a 135 with the same filter thread size. Unfortunately, it seems that the filter thread size is of no benefit to the zeiss because it is actually wider by nearly 1 cm.

Buying brand new, it's no contest with the 135GM being the better choice. Buying used though, I think this lens has value over the 135GM.

Yes, the B135 is still a larger lens. The Batis design with the flare at the end means they're quite a bit bigger than their filter sizes might otherwise indicate. That said, the point of unifying filter sizes is just that: to have the ability to easily share things like polarizers and NDs. It's still 67mm. The 82mm on the Sony would, for me, necessitate a very pricey filter upgrade.

I agree, though: new, I'd buy the GM. Used, the Batis is a way better deal.

Great lens but too expensive for f2.8 IMO.

New yes it may seem expensive but used has a great value for money. Not only are you paying for it to be 2.8, but also for the great image quality, stabilizer and that it is relatively light and portable.

Used the Zeiss Batis 135mm F2.8 OS is a good value.

I think the Optical Stabilizer makes this more useful to me than the larger & more expensive Sony 135mm F1.8

I am just not a fan of the massive size and expense of 70-200 F2.8's
- the new GM is priced out of reason for non-professional use
- Tamron has a 70-180 but it lacks OSS

I had the Sigma 135/1.8 for my Nikon and LOVED that lens; so sharp, so creamy. I convinced myself that when Sony came out with the equivalent, I'd get it instantly. They did, I read the reviews, looked for used examples...then I helped my dad buy the Batis 135 for $1000...and, well, yeah. If I'm actually honest with myself, my use cases for f/1.8 aren't that frequent. I even find myself stopping down to f/4 with portraits frequently to get adequate DOF. And the B135 is wickedly sharp - basically aperture independent - and admirably light, so it's an easy 'why not' to toss in the bag.

Still very relevant and a part of my kit. With its IQ and the MP count of the 7R4 it becomes a very lightweight telephoto from 135mm - 200mm no problem.

I would agree if you are paying new. But good copies can be had for around $900 which seems like very good value when you consider IQ, size, and weight. As others have said, it's so light, it's pretty easy to toss in the bag as a 'just in case' lens.

Yes, particularly when seen as a lighter, cheaper alternative to a high-end 70-200 whose IQ it can at least match and often beat just a little, it has a role. You give up focal length flexibility for that size and cost saving but it's certainly a lot better than just not having a superb mid-telephoto in your budget/bag at all. I don't have a Batis 135 (just a Sigma 135 I like very much but don't always bring because it's so big!) but I can see the sense of it and have always been pleased with the image quality of my Batis 85 - which isn't as good as the Batis 135.

Add the 40 and the 18 to build a sweet three lens kit.

I'd love to try the 40, but it's just so pricy for an older lens. Second hand it starts at around 650 here thankfully.

Perhaps Samyang or Sigma will make a good 135/2.8 at a more affordable price.

3 years is old. What has this "what have you done lately for me" world come to?

I stand corrected, it is indeed from 2018. My mind put it in 2015 for some reason

One of the best Batis lenses there is. I’m on number 2. It will totally kick the 70-200 out the back door. I currently have my second at i think 1100 like new. Totally worth it and as nice as Sony’s 135. I’ve had that also and tested both these lenses.

Hi Guy, did the Batis passed the Big Bronco test?
