Overview:

Ideal for a wide range of photo and video applications including landscapes, portraits, street photography, architecture, and events, the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is a small, light, and bright standard zoom for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras. Offered here with a Sony E-mount, this lens provides a versatile full-frame equivalent zoom range of 27-75mm and a wide constant aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range.
The lens design includes three high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements coupled with a special low dispersion element. Together they minimize the total number of elements for superb optical quality without excessive weight. Autofocus is exceptionally fast and quiet thanks to the lens's stepping motor, which can be particularly useful when shooting video or fast-moving subjects such as children and animals.
An ultimate workhorse, the lens features a minimum focusing distance of just 4.8", enabling it to be used for macro-style close-up photography, and the lens is also outfitted with a rounded seven-blade diaphragm for a pleasing bokeh quality.

Could be a great travel lens with the A6000 series or even the EV-10. Certainly a thought

Honestly a homerun product in that space if you ask me, especially considering the E and L mount varieties.

That is seriously tiny. Perfect match for an APSC small form factor and a very reasonable price. I bet it sells really well.

The lack of optical stabilization makes it fairly irrelevant.

Right... lack of OSS on a 28-75 (FE eq) lens makes it fairly irrelevant..... lol. I guess Sigma, Tamron and Samyang didn't get that memo.... Oh wait... Tamron 28-75 mm sold like hot cakes.

Super tiny and light 18-50 on APSC with Sigma sharpness and 500$ price tag is gonna also sell like hot cakes.

So, now I am curious how this might stack up against the 28-60mm. Full frame is getting cheaper but of course, if you're in APSC land or your ultimate goal is small form factor...then there you go. However, the 28-60mm is pretty sharp and appears to be sharper on the long end verses the 28-70mm 2.8 Sigma.

I wouldn't be surprised if a modest crop on the 28-60 results in similar output as this lens at...say...50mm (70 equiv).

Anyway, I'm sure someone will do the comparison.

I do not have steady hands and I use the A7C which is not as easy for me to hold as steady as the slightly larger bodies of the A7Rx series. I use the Sigma 24, 35, 45, 65, 90 & 28-70. I have not had issues at shutter speeds >=1/15 that were a result of lack of OSS.

Perhaps the size (diameter and length) and lightness of these lens is the reason and it seems that the APS-C 18-50 has similar physical characteristics.

Overall, I am really pleased with the Sigma series of lens for my needs. The video interviews with the current president of Sigma are helpful to understand their approach to their lens business.

if I was using a A6XXX, I would definitely be interested in this lens

It's impressively small. Just still amazes me Sigma chooses to not provide any weather sealing except at the rear.

Here's another good review. This guy has been a big Sony APSC user and gave it high praise. Honestly, that price is really tempting. Even if you don't shoot APSC that much, the size and IQ looks to be really attractive for a small compact set up.

"Lens's vignetting is significant even on the smaller APS-C detector, at 18 mm amounting to over 3 EV, exceeding 2 EV in the middle of the focal range, and keeping close to 1.8 EV at the maximum focal length.

Distortion is another aberration which correction is given up in case of C series instruments and in this case the tactics of Sigma remains the same. At the widest angle you get barrel deformations exceeding a level of -5% and at the 50 mm focal length you see its pincushion variant reaching almost +3%."

"We expect Adobe to add a one-click correction profile for Lightroom Classic soon. In the meantime, dial in about +25 distortion correction at 18mm, -8 at 35mm, and -10 at 50mm to straighten things out."

It looks really small next to the full frame 28-70/2.8 DG DN (which is already small for a fast FF mid-range zoom). They have changed the order of zoom and focus rings on this new one compared to e.g. 28-70. I personally prefer having the focus ring at the top and zoom ring at the bottom as in 28-70.

I'd surely be interested in the new 18-50 if I was shooting with one of the Sony APS-C models but since I'm only shooting with my FF cameras (A7C, A9 and Sigma fp) I'll stick to my E-mount and L-mount 28-70/2.8 DG DN pair. My wife has a Sony A6300 paired with a Sigma 30/1.4 DC DN but she's not shooting actively these days.

Marc seems to like it!

Many forget the apsc cameras way outsell their full frame counterparts: looks like Sigma knocked it out of the park with this one, and I predict it will be the biggest selling apsc lens over the next twelve months.

Pre-ordered one for my CL. It's a perfect travel/hiking kit. Now, I wish they'd give us an 18-200

Wow, it's tiny!
Found this on "FindingRange"

Just a little bigger than the 50 Summilux...and an ounce or so lighter.

I ordered one of these. At some point I'll have to sell off some APS-C zooms, I've accumulated too many.

In Japan it will be available to customers from 10/29. Not sure about all the other markets but probably soon after that.

Just got an email from B&H saying they tried to charge my card for the lens today. Long story short, my card was expired and had to re-enter a new one.
Anyways, guess they must have got some in, I pre-ordered early.
We'll see if I get a shipping notice in the morning.
