For Sony users, it would take out the 'lightest modern short MF telephoto' award. Sigma's 90/2.8 is 295 grams and carries a corrugated hood, around 40 grams as memory serves. This unit totals to 250g + 35g adapter + ~15g for a light Cosina hood = 300g, with tiny filters too.
Interesting to see the different approaches here. The Sigma 90/2.8 is a very complex and profile dependent lens of 11 elements in 10 groups (five are 'APD'), unheard of just a few years back in this class. Cosina gets there with - very likely - better glass as a more traditional 7/7 design, 2/3 of the complexity of the Sigma. It will be only Cosina's second APO lens with no asph elements, after the 110/2.5. Nothing like true MF, as well.
It's likely to show less distortion and may be useable without profiles if you are happy with a little wide open vignette, which many add in any event. Breathing may be welcome if it lengthens the focal length at portrait distances. (Sony's 85/1.8 ends up longer than many 90mm lenses, 13% breathing mag'n, Batis 85mm is similar.)
Less than Loxia 85 performance starting wide open would disappoint, that one is the benchmark here. Not long to wait, good to see they are moving in this neglected focal length region, for mix and match users it fits neatly between 75mm and 110mm. ...Show more →
If you use a helicoid adapter to get close to the Sigmas MFD it’s more like 50-70 grams for the adapter, and the quality might suffer at closer distances.
