p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mt Hood and fall colors

This is the first photo I've ever posted on FM, so please forgive me if I don't do this correctly.

I've been attempting to get this image for nearly a decade. I'm usually too early and the vine maples are green, too late and the colors have turned to brown, or the skies are clear, or the mountain is covered in clouds. Monday morning I arrived at daylight and I figured it was too overcast for any color in the clouds, but as I found a location to set up my tripod I noticed a little pink beginning to show near the peak. I quickly set up and adjusted my settings just in time. The vine maples were bursting with color even in low light. Shot with a Nikon Z6 .. Nikkor Z 24-70 f4 .. ISO-100, 1/10 sec, f/4.5, @ 32mm

I really like the colors. Mt Hood is one of my favorite photographic targets, this appears to be from the north looking south. I love the lines leading you through the photo.

Thank you! Yes, it's on the north/northwest side.

Thank you Rajan! That's the piece of the image that caught my eye as well. I was in too big of a hurry to catch the light.

Very good entrance into posting photos on FM!
Out of focus elements that are just used for framing in landscape photos don’t bother me a bit.
I love the line of ‘fire’ that is the maples.

One constructive critique, it looks like you probably used a LR gradient filter to pull down the sky? It looks like this filter was also darkened the top of the tree on the right. This could probably be avoided using either a color or luminance range mask while using the gradient filter. PM are for details if that isn’t clear. OR I could have missed the boar entirely and you used a physical grad filter…

Looks like your hard work paid off. Fantastic image. Even from the small thumbnail on the forum home page it really jumped off the page with that striking line of color and at full screen view it's a really nice image. Well done!

Very nice. I think the subtle sunset works really well with those vine maples. A more explosive sunset would ruin the mood here IMO.

I love a good story about getting that photo in your mind. I would say it was well worth the repeated effort! I like that you included the pine tree on the right to keep the viewer's eyes from falling out of the frame with all those strong leading lines being diagonal. The crisp white snow looks fantastic in contrast to that vibrant orange/red. I'm surprised you decided to shoot so low to the ground though.

Thank you! I tend to underexpose my landscapes, so I adjusted the exposure and a little bit of saturation.

Thank you, appreciate your comment. The flat boulder I set up on was lower on the foreground giving the appearance of the camera being low.
